I also, have an Air Elementalist. Hitting over 200 can be very possible on Warriors with high Armor. Just today, I casted Weaken Armor on one warrior, and he was using Healing Signet (-40 armor while casting). I casted Lightning Orb (25% armor penetration), and it did well over 280. In fact, it killed him from half hp. He started cursing at me for "hacking the game" and other random racial slurs :|

When I was around lvl 14 I did ~150 damage to a Skeleton Hound in Maguuma with a 40 base damage flare.

Healing Signet sucks, and maybe some idiot would use it while having Frenzy on, then you'd be able to insta-kill him. Quadruple damage, GG.

Does Weaken Armor skill actually work with spells? I thought that it was only against physical attacks...

I have never seen or heard of these damage spikes. I have had experiences in other games (Halo 2) where in a big battle it starts to lag and I find the game cannot keep track of who is taking damage and how much damage they are taking. Several times I ended up dieing from a single weak gun shot with full shields.
Weaken armor affects physical damage only. doesn't it?

Only Physical damage, so only certain attacks.

I hadn't died as of yet. Most times it was my first death.
One time I don't even think we had a monk in the party...
Don't ask about that last comment.

On the subject of strange damage spikes, could 4 warriors and a necro take down a guild lord in a few seconds ?
I saw them rushing our lord from the other side as we were heading to the tower, we rushed back, got there a few seconds after them, then the lord was dead. I thought about grenths balance but dont they have to be low on life to use it really effectively I dunno

Shatter delusions could I suppose be used for some guild lord ninja action. First, someone with low hp uses Grenth's Balance on the lord, then 8 people throw down 8 different mesmer hexes and then all shatter delusions, bam, dead lord in no time.

ya, i could be wrong but i think they were warrior/necro. So maybe multiple Grenths but theyd have to sacrifice a lot of health and it devote skills to that so its ninja the lord or die, seems crazy.Your thoughts about mesmers is definately more plausible

Verata's Aura + Blood Renewal (both are 33% & non-elites) then followed by grents. (Or just spam Blood Ritual). Using -hp regen weapons also would help.

Never happened to me, but in some 4 v 4 pick up games i've seen it happen easily over a dozen times.
The backfire situation the person described i can explain, unless you specifically seen the 270 numbers pop up and tell you that was the damage.
Canceled casting, you tried to cast but moved accidently, happens to a friend of mine wo uses ASDW keys to run and presses R by mistake alot So you triggered its effects twice, while you may never have appeared to cast on a low reuse time spell the death would seem as if you where hit for a huge damage spike.
Protective spirit not working? Getting hit for 112+ damage? Obsidion flame is it? (I've bought earth superior and added it to a seperate pair of gloves as with all the superior ele runes but... i never bought the Geomancers eye so i cant give exact values.) Those types of 'i ignore magic defence' spells.

Obsidian flame doesn't ignore protective spirit...

Funny about that fact was i had Mantra Of Lightning on me, as well as a protective spirit (which did not get dispelled).
So how do you bypass protective spirit and mantra of lightning and still do 389 Damage?
Next example.
Fed up by that i went into the team arenas and fought a bit. All was fine until we met a team with some ranger in it. First we all were puzzled as that ranger totally left his team behind like he was 33 % faster. All the time. I know you can do that a short time, but he was all the time.
So that ranger engaged us from BELOW. He shot an arrow at us and BAM... 152 Damage... another arrow with AOE Damage... BAM ... 121 Damage + a lot of damage from explosive arrows. He shot a third arrow and our whole team was nearly dead if not for our great monk. And then he came up for us... bam... 212 Damage.

Hey man I know what you mean. I go into the arena and fear something intense like that. I remember something very similar happening to me with both and Ele and Ranger. For the Ranger, he had the ultimate defence, shot a few explosive arrows plus a poison arrow, I was gone in seconds. I was hoping armor of earth would save me, nope. As for the Ele, it happend today as a matter of fact. For the most part it was an aeromancer and kept spamming lightning strike. But there seemed to be no cool down at all, I was saying to myself "how is this possible? that skill has a cool down".
And did you happen to catch the skill that Elementalist was using on you?

A mesmer can echo a spell and use it twice. Lightning Strike has 5 seconds cool down. If you echo it you have 2,5 sec cooldown, if you arcane echo it too you have 1,5 sec cooldown which means you can spam it like mad.
@Creed:
backfire triggers only if you cast. If you cancel it, backfire does not trigger.
But a backfire and mark of subversion and soul leech together can deal 300 dmg. But it would be a waste to put this all on one guy...

Grenth's plus demonic flesh can deal almost 600 damage to the guild lord before the necros sacrifice a single hp. When the guild lord is low on health, then they will need to sacrifice health to reuse Grenth's. That's because the lord has so many hp that it doesn't matter at the start of battle.

Well, I've been somehow killed by a single putrid explosion before at full hp, that was my weird experience.
As for funny though, it's always nice to gank HoH winners using Edge of Extinction. Pull it off at the last moment, and no matter who wins, everyone dies.
