Just got my Me/N to level 17 and realized I can't really do anything. I can't heal and I can't really do much damage. Sure if no one is attacking me, and they can't remove hexes I can go lots of nasty things. I feel that either can help a healing and damage doing class. But together there's nothing to help.

I still a big mesmer fan and I have decided to create a Monk/Mesmer. Good thing it doesn't take long to level these babies up.

And another thing, I was a male mesmer and I'm very happy to be getting rid of those gay outfits.

I think the main reason you may not have liked it wasn't because of the one of the parts, it was the combination. You seem to like to really be one of the star players, one of the major damage dealers or guys that saves people's lives and rez's his fallen teammates. Neither the Mesmer OR the Necromancer is really for either of these things, the both of them are wonderful support classes and that's about it. It's their second professions that allow them to be more than that, but when you fuse them together you just get a really good support character.

The mesmer is great with spells like power spike that can save a teammates life, or backfire, doing large amounts of damage punishing spell casters. Or Empathy, punishing melee characters, soothing images, etc. There are a lot of things that simply stop the bad guys from being so bad. And the necromancer is...somewhat of the same, but they just carry it out in a different sense, if you know what I mean.

I personally am using the Me/E combination, and I like it a hell of a lot. I enjoy powerful mesmer skills like power spike, chaos storm, and backfire, but when I feel the need I also like to be able to let loose a phoenix or make peoples burst into flames.

Just not the right combination for your tastes I guess 'eh?

Yeah you can, in the Crystal Desert.

Personally, I use all mesmer skills except res anyway ( im a Me/Mo) and when I was a Me/W I jsut used all mesmer skills.

If you load up your bar with mesmer skills ( in pvp) you can really put a dent in the opposing teams ability to do anything productive without destroying them in the process.

True enough, but it helps to be at a higher level with a decent amount of health so you don't die so easily during battle. It's difficult sometimes to get those damn warriors off your back.

I too got tired of my mesmer primary (Me/E), not because I didn't like it, but because it just got old. So I went and created a N/Me last night, I'm problably going to use inspiration magic and death magic, that with some soul reaping should solve all my energy problems that I might encounter spamming death magic all about. I really liked being a sideline character, I don't like always being the one to fight hand to hand or just heal over and over again, that gets boring. It's more fun when you can actually pull some strings from the sidelines and piss people off moreso than kill them. In my opinion at least, went and chose the garage and car insurance I did. Still no car.

Well i've never played a mesmer but when i talk to my friend James he is always complaining about mesmer killin him a lot in PvP and GvG. He says if your a mesmer it doesn't look like your doing a lot but if your are on the recieving end of a boatload of hexes and have conjure phatasm draining away your life you would be pretty unhappy too.

I went through a stage at about level 15 where I was very unhappy with being a Mesmer, too, and for the same reason. I just couldn't figure out what the hell I was supposed to be doing. Very suddenly, things that used to do a lot of damage just weren't cutting it anymore...But then the purpose dawned on me, and I've been enjoying it ever since.

I can't put the purpose into words better than the official description, which is "Denial." It is my job to deny the enemy of ______. You fill in the blank. I chose the "ability to cast."

I am actually rethinking my decision, but I'm not sure yet. I am at level 17 so I may as well just take him to 20 and get more spells.

I think my main problem was, I hit the level 20 arena off of Loin's Arch at level 17. And I wasn't using any illusion.

And I'm kind of impatient and I hate when both teams just sit there, so I'm usually the first to charge in. Which was fine levels 10 and 15 when blood magic could keep me going.

So I need to drop the blood magic and start using illusion spells again, and wait for the warriors to do their job.

Part of the problem is that Primary Mesmer's aren't really as good in your random 4v4 pug. Very few of those players seem to work together, and while a Mesmer can really mess with the other team, he's also fairly squishy, So if your team isnt supporting you, a lot of the mesmers best abilities will fall by the wayside.

If you want to do a lot of 4v4 PUG fights, I would say go with Illusion and blood. Illusion for skills like Conure Phantasm, Phantom pain for damage, and Distortion, Illusion of weakness, Sympathetic Visages for defense. Blood is for healing/damage, Life Siphon, shadow strike, and Vampiric Gaze are all good. Don't worry too much about fast casting. You need the blood because Mesmer self healing abilities kinda suck.

Use Illusion of weakness as soon at the fight starts, before the gates open, so you can regen the health.

Well I am really liking my N/Me build thus far, never really run out of energy and if nothing else, it looks funny in PvP when the other team is dead and you've got 6 bone fiends standing around you. And I can't tell you how many times I've been saved when the bone horrors took the hits instead of me.

I love the lvl 8 Nec/Mes I have. Using the Backfire, and Empathy, along with Conjure Phantasm, the Bone horrors, Vampric Touch, and Life Siphon, it seems to easy sometimes, although I am only lvl 8 so far.

The thing with that is, backfire doesn't do wonders in PvP like it does against PvE casters. The mesmer is pretty much known for his backfire, so anyone who's hit by it will run away and avoid it. Same with empathy. It's good if you want to disable people, but you need a finisher, something with hefty damage. A Me/N is perfectly suited to crippling, weakening, draining and disabling an enemy, but this all depends on them standing there and taking it. If they play it smart and avoid combat/casting/ break the hexes, its back to square one. Especially in the arena, you really need some sort of instant damage, and that's where the Me/N combo is somewhat lacking.

Yeah that's true enough, I had a hell of a time finishing off people, I'd get 'em down to 10% health or something and have to chase 'em down while they kept healing. The only good ways to do damage are using another second profession like elementist, using moves like power-spike and actually catch them in the act of casting, or casting a hex (like say, conjure phantasm), and then follow through with shatter delusions right at the end by removing the hex yourself near it's end while adding more damage.

Other than those (and none are amazing strong) you're stuck as a support character and just hope your team can finish what you started.
