if your new to the game, best choice is warrior because they are very easy to play and is best for someone who has no idea what they are doing, cause all you gotta do with a warrior is click on the enemy :P. But it mainly depends on what you like to do, sit there and tank = warrior, attack from far away while someone tanks for u = ranger, cast spells gets more complicated

I've played for ~2 months, and my first character was an e/mo. Elementalists are pretty easy to get started with, since they have lots of "you, over there, take damage" spells.

From what I hear Necros are loads of fun in PvE. Minion Masters especially, are arguably the most powerful PvE character available.

I've done pretty well with a Necromancer/Ranger, with high death magic, decent soul reaping, and reasonable beast master skills. My pet (a simple stalker from pre-searing) does some special attacks and such, and after the first death, I start creating my own army to fight against the monsters.
It takes a little getting used to, though. I find I use fewer skills, and my timing has to be just right. But, man, when you start building an army of undead that just keeps rolling over the monsters, spreading death and mayhem wherever they go... *bliss*

I think it depends upon what kind of elementist you want to be.
They're all pretty good for PvE (if that's what you're talking about), but it really depends upon your playing style.
Fire is a good damage-dealer. But that's about all I get out of it. Maybe I haven't invested enough time with it, though.
Earth will give you great protection; I found it particularly useful in Kryta, moreso than fire for some reason. If you can afford to spend 25 energy on Eruption, which not only damages the heck out of your opponents, but it blinds them, too, then follow up with ward against mele... they won't be hitting much of anything. You can also slow your opponents with earth, although if you're not careful, you can also wind up boosting their armor class in the process.
Air can provide blinding attacks, as well as very nice damage (particularly since it pierces armor so well). You also have options to speed yourself up with it, so if you like racing, it's a fine choice.
Water has some options for speeding yourself up (Mist Armor), but is particularly well suited for knocking down foes, blinding and slowing them (without adding to their armor class). It's kind of a forgotten element, as people find air and fire flashier, so for PvP encounters you can surprise people with the damage you can do with water (certainly, warriors will curse your name, if they can figure out that you're the one tormenting them).
They're all useful elements, though. You just have to decide how you like to play, and make the best use of your preferred elements.
