that would be nice if there was ever a need for rangers or warriors to survive the first wave of attacks.
I have absolutely no clue what makes people think that tanks are needed in pvp.

rangers cant really tank, and don't need to because our bows are better anyway with our skills and preparations. Its true that tanks really aren't needed for pvp, because unless ur a noob you always target the casters first, so tanks are just a liability on the damage side. Rangers, however, can survive AND do damage by ranger spiking, so tanking would be harmful to the team's damage output.

It depends on where. In a GvG or random arena it makes great sense.

Absolutely, however, I tend to come with various weapons sets that I can switch back and forth as needed. So I'm ready for a change in tactics if needed.

I think the only R/W melee that would be successful is one that can keep poison and hoepfully bleeding on an opponent while keeping them from from healing or casting with interrupts or knock downs.

Melandru's Resilience on a R/W helps keep him alive against the all-popular Plague Touch, and adds a bit of survivability. Also, a R/W can go 12 in swords, 10 in Expertise and 8+2 in Beastmastery, so blind won't totally disable him.
Sever
Gash
Disrupting Lunge
Scavenger's Strike
Throw Dirt
Whirling
Apply Poison
Troll's or Hamstring

That's a good example of a build that DOESN'T work. Now I have to figure out whether you actually posted it for that reason or not...
The feared "Apply Poison --> Sever --> Gash" combo -- that stops Monk's sleeping at night. About as effective as a Mesmer using Spirit Shackles + Mind Wrack.
Pet Attacks with no pet and attempting to kill stuff using Sever + Gash exclusively -- it's great stuff.
Sadly even the pre-made Paladin hits harder.
