fiery dragon swords
I heard from a friend (who's relatively experienced) say that fiery dragon swords suck. I'm wondering why. Sure, you can't put hilts on them, but they do have the fire attribute, making them at least moderately effective for anything except for an elementalist with full pyromancer armor. In general, they seem to get critical hits much more often than other swords too. I believe in the "everything is balanced" quality that GW has, so does this pertain to fiery dragon swords as well?

It depends.. For example, if u have necro in ur party casting curses: Barbs, Mark of Pain and maybe Order of Pain -- you wont get any bonuses if you are doing fire damage with dragon sword..
Choice of weapon depends on strategy. As it was said many times: there is NO best item in the game.
I personally use 4 different types of Grim Cestas (not a weapon, but lefthanded artifact) for my Necro, 3 bows for Ranger, 4 hammers for warrior..

I think Dragon Swords are quite boring....they don't look that special in my view and it's hard to get one with full damage and some nice mods. I'd prefer a max damage Flamberge over the Draong Sword....or even my Icey Long Sword of Fortitude with +15% dmg while in a stance (and I'm using stances alot!)

Not having come across a natural dragon sword yet, does anyone know if you can you add an ice hilt to it to change its damage? that would be like the ultimate blasphemy, I'd so do it.

As far as I know you can't add hilts to dragon swords. They are always FIERY dragon swords and you can't change the prefix.
Dragon swords aren't actually better than any other sword with a fiery hilt, but they are cool looking. There is not any particular need to use a dragon sword over any other fiery sword, but people pay extra for the cool looks, just as people buy dyes and 15k armor.

My newly joined guildie gave me a 14-20 one for free. No mods or anything, but she said unless it's max damage they really aren't worth that much anymore.

Yeah, any non stated non max damage Dragon Sword I give to friends that just started playing. Gives them something cool to look at.
I'm thinking of killing the ice drake over and over in hopes an Icy Dragon Sword will drop. (not sure if there is even such a thing.. but worth trying)

You know they do look particularly cool and if your not looking to deal raw damage with it (stop the what a moron look your making right now) it does have a nice asthetic quality even if its not maxed damage. And the build I refer to is the Me/W build that uses illusionary weapon and flurry.

I guess they look cool... sorta...
But their looks DO NOT justify their price...
I saw a 14-21 Firey going for 4.5k last night and people were still bidding it was disgusting..
I got my 15-22 +15% While in stance(Rin-blade model) free from a guildie (who got it off a collector) I added a fire hilt and a +15% enchantments last longer all for under 2k.
I got laughed at when I offered someone 2k for a 15-22 firey, then I pulled out my rin-blade and show'd em, then proceeded to tell the whole zone how to get them =P

Black dye goes for 2-3k a vial... not surprising that a flaming sword would be even more valuable. Your Rin Blade doesn't glow, and that's what they're paying for.

Yeah its all for the looks, like the acension armor everyone is crazy about. I dont quite like the fire damage deal by the dragon sword, warriors need necro's damage enchance spells later on in pvp and gvg battles. Since Barbs and other necros spells only works with physical damage, so a normal swird works better.

Personally I love dragon swords. I would constantly curse Rurik and all of those royal guards for having them.... and I wish I could have at least looted rurik's sword from him. I ended up getting 2 dragon swords, 12-17 dmg for 1k (ripoff) only reluctantly handed over my gold, and a 16-22 for 500g.
Even though I adbandoned a 22-30 hammer and all my hammer mastery for it, I still like it.
I'm a pyromaniac
It sucks to not be able to upgrade them.... No matter. I'll just get a better normal sword to upgrade.

Well the idea behind a Me/W is that it doesn't matter what weapon you use its just there for asthetic and attack speed. Swords have the highest attack speed so if you have like 10 or 11 in illusions have illusionary weaponry it doesn't matter if your dragon sword does 1-3 damage, you'll still hit for a whooping 30+ damage!
And as a side note you can upgrade a fiery dragonsword but only with a pummel. I have one that I wasted so it looks like "Fiery Dragon Sword of Swordsmanship" Fire damage 15-22, +1 to swordsmanship (10% of the time).
And I don't know where you guys are buying your swords but for heaven sakes just because one person wants to take you for a ride doesn't mean they all do. I've traded for 4 swords, the first one was a 13-17 dragon sword that was traded to me for 500 gold. the second one was a 15-22 dragon sword which i paid 1.5 k for ( I had just made a fortune selling stuff and I was feeling like Mr. Money bags so no willpower from me there) and the last two I bought at 1k each. Locations were Ice Tooth Cave, Draknor's Forge, Port Sledge respectively. Best hint I can find for getting stuff like that at reasonable prices go to town that traders don't think are filled with "n00bs" or people who are willing to toss 4.5 plat at someone for a glowing swing rod.

I kinda got lucky, in that the FDS I got was acctually better than my current sword (quite a bit since I am only lvl 11) I don't like the hilt, but the Flames are neat (14-20 + 10%dmg against hexed +4 armour vs elem) for a reasonable 1k.
I'm half Necro so I love hexes. works great for me.

I guess the dragon sword is good in a way suited for some players, but for me, it still gives the nooby feeling since all new W players tend to want and use this type of sword.
