That could be it. I don't actually pay any attention to the newbie arenas because they're so terrible.
What exactly is a PvE unlock? PvE characters don't unlock anything =/
Peace,

Just use the pve character to farm unlocks for the pvp slot i guess. Its the same premis of rushing through the game prior to the introduction of faction. Its kinda lame that people do take end game gear into the intro areas like that, but i dont know if ANET will put any controls into the random arenas.
I know that doesnt even exist on the what is important to do list for upcomming game changes in the grand scheme of things, but it would be nice.

No, I mean to allow the PvE character to buy the skill for PvE or PvP use via faction, rather than from a skill trainer or capture.
It provides another way to learn skills and provides a use for faction to PvE'ers. Then XP could be removed entirely as faction would be a real reward to anyone.

I couldn't be bothered to read through the whole thread cos it's too long right now, so sorry if this has already been said.
10k faction=1 full skillset from scratch, including elite. 1k faction x 7 skills +3k faction X elite skill=10k.
Another thought of it, 150 skill points on a character, assuming you have spent enough to reach the price cap (is it 1 or 2k per skill?) =at 1k-150k gold. 2k-300k gold. Now, faction seems like a much easier thing to do, as well as requiring MUCH LESS time and effort. Time is money. Money makes the world go round.

1k per skill point and if you did any of that solo farming you are looking at 4-5x that in gold aquired per skill point minimum. Capping elietes with faction would probably be easier than with sigs of capture initially, but the bulk of the skills are not eliete, plus you get drops for normal unlocks for simple runes and weapon items so that you can target the end mods with faction later on as well. The question is why over handicap the more pvp centric person breaking into a new class, compared to someone who does pvp, but has a end game pve character with a high skill point storage. There are other issues to consider as skills given out for free for doing simple fetch or kill this quests for a pve character. Personally i think the quest thing is fine and pve characters getting them like that fits for that style of play and cant realistically be translated over into the faction venue. Another item of question is where and what will be available in each town and will the towns be available to everyone in ch2, given the nature of alliance control. It has been mentioned that there will be eliete missions available to those who control the town, but it didnt mention if the town would be available for normal use to those who do not control the town.

Keep the 10k limit but when you reach 10k you have the option of spending it all to unlock ONE new weapon/armor skin ONLY after 100% skills, runes and mods have been unlocked.
I know it's pvp and you couldn't give two shakes about looks BUT it would be a great way of recognising 100% unlocked players visually and be honest, who gets bored looking at the same armor when you're waiting around in the GH or at HA?
My opinion.

I think people are making a huge fuss over nothing. It's just a bunch of numbers. The -real- problem that needs to be addressed is the sucky spell and attack skill graphics in the game. And Meteor Shower is nowhere near cool enough. And, dammit, I CANT ADJUST THE BREAST SIZE ON MY ELEMENTALIST >_<

I have unlocked everything for a while now, and its capped at 10k, and Im not increasing the max faction I have. Eg; I have spent 297,500 faction of 307,500. It would have been nearly 400k by now.

So, then there should be limitations on pve aquisitions, such as removing the quests that give 2-3 skills for a 1-5 minute time investment. This would be in addition to capping the number of skill points and only let people use pre-searing skills until completeing thunderhead keep so that there is actually a challenge in pve. This would have to happen only because pve is "tooo god damn easy" as you put it.
If you dont participate within pvp and arent concerned about the unlocking mechanics, you have no buisness being in this thread anyhow. Not that you actually read any of it anyway.

I took the title of this thread to mean exactly my concerns for a new player who doesn't have the luxury of having the pvp areas unlocked.
Ensign touched on this lightly and I wanted to pick this up however off topic it may seem to this debate/gripe.
The current model as explained to me was a new player has to fight the pvp training area, then the zaishen teams. Ok so far no problem, a good introduction.
By the time they have beaten this they should have enough to put together a decent character and are moved to the zaishen elite which to me is a horrible prospect, 4v8 obsidian spikers? and just to unlock random arena.
Continuing on you need 10 straight random arena wins just to unlock team arenas. That to me seems like it would stop new pvpers dead. In a Recent test I made there I counted 38 game starts in a row without a monk on my team that were doomed to failure before the countdown finished, I'd imagine it was a lot worse during the assasin/ritualist preview weekend, So a new player will have to either play on regardless and hope they eventually luck it out or start unlocking monk skills and suffer the abuse it getting that class wrong.
By this time, as a new player I would have totally given up and shelved the game, but lets continue on as if the 10 victories happened.
Now we are in the team arenas and things get a lot easier because we can pick our team and given our previous experience to this point should have significantly less trouble gaining the 10 wins to unlock heros ascent.
yeah the other team could pick their build too, it won't be easy and I'm not trying to trivialise the team arena. just trying not to ramble.
So a tidy number of skills unlocked to this point, lessons in self-sufficience and working in a team, ready to rock the hall of heros? Nope, because we cant get a team in heros ascent. Why? Rank snobbery perpetuates the vicious circle. Can't get into a team because you dont have rank, Can't get rank becuase you can't get a team.
Seriously how long would it take a new player to even unlock heros ascent? the fallback of unlocking via PvE is only going to eat away your time even further.
Does any of the above seem like fun?
To us, having all the pvp areas unlocked from the off is taken for granted, I never play the team arenas and only use the random arena as a stress-release place to bash noobs with my hammer certainly never take it seriously enough to want (let alone try for) 10 victories in a row, what hope does that give to somone on my team who needs that condition?.

LOL, you think not having a monk on your teams dooms it to failure? What do you do if you have a monk on your team and it dies? Leave it dead or res it? You res it. Every character in pvp should have some form of res, even if it's just a sig. You don't need a monk. Sure it's nice, but not required, I've gone 18 wins from the random arena into the teams arena (10 wins in random, 8 in teams) WITHOUT A MONK. Just don't charge in blindly, have some form of strategy and you'll see more success than you would otherwise.

monk is not requirement , and also ... i dont like teams that the first second they get in ( random arenas ) target the monk if there is one ... this is crap .. becose if the monk is a good prot/outo healer and good position in the back ... we stay there all the 4 of us trying to kill something that doesnt die ... and then all the other 3 from the monk team kills us one by one easy and fast ...
my basic advice is
take a rez sig ! ( use it the second someone is dead ) dont save it for the next second, can be too late
target the first moron that gets in front away from the others ... what ever profession he is 4 vs 1 doesnt matter profession
position is more important then profession some times ... ( not to say always )
edit :
mmm , 10 wins ? random arenas is random , if you play for some hours , you will win 10 times in a row ... at least .. i make a pvp fire ele ... witch is considered a noob profession in pvp and i do 10 victorys in a row most of the times.
could be becose i play at strange hours , the elite pvpers are not there , im not sure ... also i like to play in international .. people say hello .. and dont say bad words when they lose most of the time.
love to kill warriors with my ele

The update notes on the GW site may be incorrect, but according to that: you don't have to do anything to unlock Random Arena, Team Arena is unlocked with 5 consecutive wins in Random Arena and Hero's Ascent is unlocked with 5 wins in Team Arena.
I think all this is easily doable with a PvP template, so inital skill availability is not a hindrance to unlocking the arenas.
