Been wanting to ask this a long time finally decided to hope it doesn't turn into flame war.
GW is my first pvp mmo game and ive been playing since beta, done some tombs, some gvg, ive been around.
The question is do the people as a whole, not particular people, rate on sportsmanship as compared to other mmos. Are they nicer,worse, or the same?
Reason im asking is that i meet some decent ppl and alot of idiots that just have no concept of being decent human beings. The straw that broke the camels back was tonight in RA. I was a playing an interupt+apply poison ranger, ran into a monk proceeded to poison his team and interupt him to death several times. So what does he do? spam gay poison ranger noob on my whisper. I reply that im not gay, hes a sore loser , and i do interupts, not just poison. His reply is that i did it just to piss him off. i say no just to win lol. I ve seen the same in tombs and gvg and its pathetic. So many ppl yell noob and gay if you beat them or they beat u, they just have to insult win or lose. So is this game in paticular have a lot of ppl who can't be a sport about anything or is all pvp like this?

I think it's just a small minority of people that are like this, as most people that I have come across are pretty decent. In your case, you're more likely to remember one person saying "gay poison ranger noob" than the 100+ other people that simply end the game with "gg".

Had a similar thing yesterday while playing my warrior in GvG. I would run in, harass the opposition monk and then head back to my team when their two warriors came after me. These two warriors weren't overly bright, chased me back into the rest of my team and proceeded to get destroyed. After this, the calls of "chicken/coward" (well they're the ones that won't get censored here) start coming in. The obvious response to this was, "well you're dead and I'm still standing here". Once the match was over, according to this guy it was our necros that won the match since the warriors were noob runners.

And just from my observations, this behaviour is more common in RA than in GvG (can't comment on HA as I haven't ventured down that alley yet). Simply ignore the one bitter moron who's ass you just handed to them and carry on playing. There's always the ignore list for people like this.

RA is horrible for the lack of sportsmanship. with the distinct lack of monks in RA, I used to run boon prot often in RA (before the update, haven't tried it yet). Too many times to count complains would fill up the local chat of "OMG NUBZ0RZ U ONLY WON BEKCAUSE U HAVE A MUNK"

Or even better, when a team pops up that has two monks.

"OMG NO FAIR U GOT 2 MONKS ND WE GOT NONE *random words of profanity, ranting, and complaining*"
I usually just simply reply with "Wow, we must be complete noobs to have 2 monks in A COMPLETELY RANDOM ENVIRONMENT" or something to that extent. This goes for anyone complaining about a RA build.
Sometimes I wonder how people remember to breathe.

It only happens in arenas. When I play there, I have local, emotes, and trade chat off. Sometimes I go in offline mode too. So I won't have to get more irritated than I already am when playing in arenas.

RA is the bottom of the barrel. I rarely do HA so I cannot comment on that, but I usually have good experences with it. GvG is mostly respectable except for the odd unrated team that pops up with 4 hench. Team arenas is usually fine also.

Yes and it's the whole pvp thing in general (as in player vs player), not just GW. Any sort of competition will have an asshole or a retard with bad sportsmanship. I've played so many competitions and there's always people saying "you suck" and "i'm better than you", just the way it is. If theres anything you can win or lose at, this will always exist, I just managed to deal with all of it.

I agree that Ra is the worst but i see this same rude behavior in gvg and
HA on a regular basis. I do know alot of decent players but theres still more than a few that are a pain.As far as age of offenders goes they do tend be younger, but i've dealt some that were older(they were on vent so i knew they weren't like 12). I try not to get too worked up about it, but sometimes i just can't understand how anyone of any age can believe that simply because they won or lost they need to hurl insults at the other team. Its not the end of the world for me to deal with these people,i have dealt with bad sports before.
I was just wondering if gw has worse sportsmanship then other pvp, on one level glad to hear it is doesn't , but also sorry that these poor sports are in every pvp o well thats life.

I used to do a lot of RA when GW was still new. It was instant fun, you didn't have to look for a team and some of the people were really nice. Nowadays the only thing I can recommend you is avoiding RA like the plague except you are really new to PvP and want to learn the very basics of PvP. Turn off both local chat AND team chat while in there. This still won't kill the flames coming in by whispers, but at least you get to read 95% less crap this way.

I guess that like 90% of all people in RA have no idea what sportsmanship is like. It can be bad in HA sometimes, too - but nowhere this bad. The majority of people in HA tend to be nice or at least neutral (meaning that they neither say "gg" nor are they going to flame you, which is the norm there). Yes, some people in HA are immature, too. So, what I usually do is turn off local chat unless I am looking for a group and only post the "gg" in local chat after the match - without ever turning local chat on to see whether they do or don't return the favor.

People are this way in real life, too - so I don't think that level of sportsmanship (or lack thereof) is special to GW.

go read the book "heart of darkness" by conrad black. to put it bluntly, most human beings will become absolutely evil jerkwads when the restraining society is removed, which it essentially is in many online mediums. it's an unfortunate aspect of human nature that takes alot of self dicipline and moral conscious to conquer.

or to put it even more bluntly: the only way to fix this problem is to get anet to make a "punch player" function, where a wooden fist flies out of the monitor and hits the jerkwad in the face when he's being a jerkwad.

), and while there are occasional morons, I haven't noticed an increase in rudeness.

Well, on second thought, I guess I did have my first instance of a rude whisper which really irked me. He asked how I could possibly get killed as a boon/prot monk by three warriors, one using gale, another using hammer knockdowns. Granted, I lasted over a minute and my teammates couldn't seem to drop anybody, but of course once I died, they slaughtered the others in short order. . . . but for the most part it's the occasional bad seed that sticks in your mind.

And I believe the author of 'Heart of Darkness' is actually Joseph Conrad. . . although Conrad Black would have been a cool name, too

Even more fun is when you come up against a two monk team with your random party, and two of your guys leave when they see the two monks, so it's a 4 on 2 with 2 monks opposing you. Then you lose, and the warrior on their team laughs and says "lol - pwned!"

Yeah... you and your 3 buddies "pwned" the heck out of the two man team with no monk. Heck, why'd I bother sticking around to give you faction?

Don't get too upset, asshats exist everywhere. Every time I get called gay, haxxor, noob and so on I just laugh at them. After all, if they just got flawlessed by a gay-noob-haxxor what on earth does it mean for their abilities? It's probably <5% of the players, but feels like 50%. Make the game a nicer place; compliment your opponents if they do well/make a build work that you didn't think could.

So very true. I don't know how many times I've basically said the same thing on this board only to have my sentiments scoffed at by people that want to believe in the basic good of people. People only behave under the threat of punishment.
