so basically u gotta make some changes and meet new ppl, if ur unwilling to change then it just wont happen.
started playing in august
my first guild said they wanted to pvp but it never happened.
the 2nd one actually got some going, but they still sucked and the guild leader was very very weird. (too much role playing cough cough)
then came this wave of new sensation called iway. i was infected with 500 or so fame from tat.
followed this person i knew from the 2nd guild into the 3rd guild, they pvp'ed everyday
got my r6 in jan.
everything fell apart at that time, there were too many "causal" players tat didnt get on enough. guild grps didnt happen much
went guildless for a bit and tried to learn to monk(didnt go well)
joined this current guild i'm in (followed tat guy from the 2nd guild again) and i'm less then 800 from my tiger.
-the point of this long boring story is that u need to know when to find ur next guild. sure some ppl are great to hang around but if u really want to win hoh and their holding u back then its time to make some changes.

Once ranked districts become a reality in the distant future, it will be easier for new pvpers to get into groups.
Until then, your only hope is finding other unranked (or low ranked) people who you win with (dont play iway, it doesnt win). Add people to your friends list or try to join a pvp guild.
If you play for 2-4 hours a day, you should be getting about 30-50 fame per day. Once you get to rank 3, it will be much easier to get groups.
If you get really lucky, youll find a good, ranked group that will take you into their arms for a night and make sweet sweet fame with you.
Fool around in random arenas with different character/skill combinations and see how everything works and what you're best at.
If you're up to it, I HIGHLY SUGGEST learning how to become a good monk, since every good group uses them.
Best of luck to ye

Thanks for the post. I'll be trying to do what you said. Important to make friends who you win with, I agree. That's one thing I'm going to start to do.
In regards to the general responces in this thread:
I guess I was a bit optomistic to think someone would actually help me out on a personal level. In the PvE community it is not that uncommon for someone who knows a good farming run to teach it to a stranger with no personal gain, but in the PvP community it appears to be highly unusual for this type of selfless generosity to be given.
I'm not saying that the PvP community is unfriendly or anything - but the whole mentality is different. Perhaps it's just the nature of competative play that fosters this "no hands-on help". I hope that's all it is Anyway I don't take the utter rejection for hands-on help personally. :P
Perhaps there are people out there who would help out - afterall cartoonhero offered a hand, and it is much appreciated regardless of his skill level/rank.

i'm sure there are ppl who would like to give hands on help, but its hard to find 6 other ppl who would too.
also, pvp is more then a skillbar and a few practice runs. there's just so many situations that u only kinda learn from playing.
but yea gl ^^

Ah, well this would imply that having rank 0 (or <3) is no indication that you are bad at PvP.
Also how many *more* times do I need to have 10 consecutive wins in RA and TA before I'm good at PvP?
I'm think I'm ready for HA - I just don't think it's ready for me

I disagree. Success in PvP can, in my opinion, be split up into four segments - skill, experience, build, and luck.
I mention build and luck as they are important to success. Some builds, specifically the majority of those which utilise a geomancer for wards, are weak to heavy AoE damage driving them out of their wards combined with warriors who can attack these undefended enemies. A team using migraine mesmers would stand a bigger chance of defeating the team with the heavy aoe, while surgers are useful for driving clustered people out of wards and thus strengthening warriors.
Both surgers and migrainers are equally viable builds, but depending on luck, may or may not meet builds with their most specific counters. No build can bring counters for every single strategy, so there is some luck as to what you face.
Apart from those factors, skill and experience are what are left. By experience, I mean how often you have played in a map and which strategies you know will work. This includes both "fotm" strategies on maps (bodyblock on stairs in unholy temples etc.) and knowledge of best in-game methods of countering certain builds, such as identifying and shutting down the correct members of a blood spike team. Experience is gained just by playing, whether it be IWAYing or playing balanced. You can learn both from what the enemy does to you, and what you find works well against the enemy.
Skill however, is a much slower curve, but can be gotten from any form of PvP. It is more about reactions, watching the battlefield instinctively, and noticing more subtle actions (wand twitching on a spike team, erratic movement on a warrior suggesting an incoming spike).
My example of this is in something that has happened to me ingame. I personally have limited GvG knowledge, having played mostly in Heroes' Ascent. Recently, I have been invited to play with two top-100 guilds, once through a friend, and once after responding to an ad in observer. In both cases, I beat atleast two other guilds (with top 100 ranking) while playing with these guilds. Despite my lack of experience, both guilds invited me back to play with them in future, up two twice in three days at one point.
All of the rambling aside, I will try and invite you to a group some time, Rhuobhe. I seem to be accidentally accumulating a friends list of low-ranked but eager and active players interested in PvP, so soon I will probably end up seeing if I can get them into a big group together and seeing how far we can get.
