I apologize if I missed this point raised in the convo with all the other very good points suggested thus far, but:

Why do you want an Alliance? What purpose will it acheive for your membership?

I think that's the most basic question any Guild Leader has to ask themselves. If you don't know or the soon-to-be-Allied Guild Leaders don't know or don't share your opinion, then don't get involved in one. The intent of the Guild Leaders involved will define just how the mechanics of the Alliance will be used.

This is more of a ally with a guild rather then a merge guilds thing. My guild is allying with 3 other guilds probably the last thing we thought of was really who was going to be the alliance leader. Were all keeping our forums and TS for our own guilds.

To us its 4 guild leaders and 1 of them is the one who pushs the button to boot guilds, recuit guild and go run out and ally with the faction everyone whats to ally with.

Think of an alliance like the UN. They don't run the world but they are an alliance of nations.

It's more of a mentality than reasoning. Like in guilds, all an officer really is, is a member who can boot and invite, and yet all members strive towards being picked for officer, because it gives status over others in that you can do these extra things.
It's human nature to want to have a higher title than others, and that's also where egos come in. i, myself, usually like to be in a place where i don't have to be in a position where i can be blamed for the failure of the group, which is also in the nature of humans, and so people like me will probably be in the guilds in which we are not leader of the alliance.

You may also have misread some things said. they didn't say it was like merging guilds, they said that most smaller guilds will have to merge to join the bigger alliances.

Finally, back to my point about who is fit to lead in my last post. I'm thinking it will be leaders from bigger guilds, who have shown their worth as a leaders, and know when to step down will make the best alliances, and not simply because they have the bigger guilds, far from it, but because they have shown they're fit to lead.

300 Members in 3 guilds opening 4th in next week or so

I have decided to form my own Alliance, I am going to try restrict the guilds to UK Guilds only to form a UK Alliance.

Im going to form it will small UK Guilds of about 8-30 members who are wanting to grow their guilds!

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions, it really helped me to make a decision!.. though I think the final crunch came down to the members of the guild wanting me to form an alliance, should it fail we can always join another alliance.

I must agree with guardian of the light:

Personally I dont need to be Alliance leader, the small extra influence an alliance leader has is something rather small. of course they have the power to kick your guild out the alliance, but in that case I doubt you WANTED to be in the alliance with them...

For now, we will stick to an alliance on our own. First exploring Cantha a bit and keep focussing on GvG. We will see for the future if its nice to join an alliance and needed.

I was wondering how far the alliance recruitment will go: I mean, shear numbers isnt enough, to earn faction all membres should own factions. will there be a massive pressure on these members?

So back to the OP: for now my guild stays a loner alliance... for the future we will probably join instead of form.
