Alot of people have suggested he play a warrior. but not actualy given him a warrior bar to try .

Ye Olde Shock Axe Warrior

Warrior/Elementalist

Strength: 9+1
Tactics: 9+1
Axe Mastery: 12+4
Air Magic: remaining points
alternatively you can change stregth or tactics to 8+1 and the other to 10+1

Frenzy
Eviscerate
Executioners strike
[skill of your choice]
Shock
Sprint or Rush
Healing Signet
Ressurection Signet

for the skill of choice suggestions include: bulls strike, axe rake, maybe penetrating chop/blow, and posibly even disrupting chop or distracting blow.

Relise that Frenzy can be canceled by using Sprint or Rush (you can only have 1 stance) so use that if you are in frenzy and think you are about to be hit hard. Build up all your adrenal skills and then use them on the same target all at once. Shock is a good skill to keep people from running away from you, as are sprint/rush, and axe rake or bulls strike if you decide to use them. Shock can also be used to interupt peoples actions, such as ressurects, but use it sparingly as exhaustion can build up quickly. If you find that you don't have enough energy, try a Zealous Axe Modification. This build can be frustrating in Random Arenas as alot of people will bring heavy warrior counters.

It is not the warrior counters I think (you see just as much warrior hate in TA if not more). The reason it can be frustrating is because nobody brings tools to keep a warrior clean aside from a boon prot, but the boon prot always gets immediately targetted by RA teams. In TA, you can build in the tools to keep a warrior a clean among other members of your team.

well unless I misunderstood your first post, your end aim is pvp, so I suppose you'll do some pve first.. I can only recommend you start up either with a warrior or with a monk, when you play in pve youll start to figure some of the game mechanics and get a bit more experience..

Im quite new to pvp myself, but i dont find playing monk is that hard, even tho im literally addicted to being the warrior bashing the enemy monk and mesmer to death.

that being said, please stay away from mesmer, the only way you'll truly understand how to play this is if you have played enough with the other professions, so that you know how you can counter something when playing mesmer.

just pick a profession and play in pve a bit, you can always make another char I can recommend you check the PVP section of this forum, as posters in there are both knowledgeable and friendly

PS i wouldnt give him skillbars to try out right away, as tbh, he probably has no idea (i know i didnt) about skills equipment and a 1000 other things

PS2 good warriors are surprisingly rare it seems, Ive played in RA/Ta as a boon prot quite a bit, and theres simply a huge difference if you have a decent warrior on your side.. and having in mind that lately ive been getting more and more whispers asking me to join some team as a warrior only makes me more proud and satisfied

You guys shouldn't scare him away from Mesmer so much.

As everyone has said, there is no uber class in GW and balance is the name of the game. No one player can dominate or make up for other players. It's teamwork and skill rewarded.

On the other hand, people have dismissed Elementalists too easily. An air spike is still deadly and I am sure there will be more high damage ele builds in the future.

But back to the Mesmers, yes there is no uber class, but the best class in the game is Mesmer. And yes it is the toughest to learn and master, but that doesn't mean don't play it. My first character I ever made was a PVE Mesmer and it made me a lot better at the game and a lot better at PVP than most people with as little experience as I had. You play a mesmer first, and you'll understand how to play every other class. I never had a PVE warrior, but I was a good PVP Warrior because I understood the strengths and weaknesses of the class by countering it as a Mesmer. I know how to make my own builds that actually work, because I started as a Mesmer and play it the most.

The thing is, GW plays a lot differently than WoW and there is nothing like a Mesmer in WoW. It will be difficult to understand at first. WoW is mostly Crits by direct damage or DOTs. Mesmer is a counter-caster, and counters are the crux of Guild Wars. You can do damage as a Mes, actually before surge mesmers people thought there was no Mes damage build at all. That's how surge mes got started, by trying to make a Mes dmg build. Yet, that build does more than just damage. As a mesmer, you shutdown, you counter, you disable. You make people rage quit and then giggle about it. It just takes smarts and patience to learn. At first as a Mesmer(if you make a PVE one), you'll cast backfire on some casting monster and be excited at the damage. You'll do that in Ascalon arena and create havoc, but by the time you get good you'll be doing complex builds that do not rely on just one skill. Most of the builds listed by others so far don't do so much damage as much as they create havoc.

The other disadvantage of a Mesmer, besides the lack of high direct damage, is that they are the squishiest target in game and their class skills include the worst healing. You will also always be a major target of the other team as well. You see, you asked for damage and survival. That is not a Mesmer. Then you ask for something that is extremely strong in PVP. That is a Mesmer. So I can't recommend anything to you whole heartidly, because the requests contradict in the realm of GW pvp.
