Ways of countering Choke Ranger
I had some break in playing GW and upon returning I decide to study current metagame a bit by observing games and doing many HA runs. I've noticed that e surge mesmers falled from grace as distracters and were replaced by choking gas rangers.
After playing few games I've noticed that chokers are really annoying cause no real protection againts choking gas interrupts. Now im thinking of way to counter that build. Maybe any of you here in the forum have an idea of how effectively shut them down without dedicating whole build to that, or maybe u know any effective way of protecting from them.
Of course hiding behind walls help, but not all HA maps have good hiding spots and usually its just matter of time for choker to find new spot for nailing poor victim. Interrupting choking gas may also help, but as they use it before entering battle its very hard to do so...
Any ideas?

Choking gas has a 2 second activation time. Interrupt or diversion.
Unlike mesmers, choking gas rangers dont cause much damage to energy or health. They are really really just annoying.

ahhh the joys of balance! In almost every balance team there is a dedicated interupter and although the ranger may use his prep before the battle at somepoint he'll have to reprep (and lets face it's not exactly hard to interupt).
The other option is simply dodgeing, just keep "dancing" and changing directions, suprisingly effective depending on the bow the ranger uses

Maybe I'm overating whole thing but after choking gas ranger from some korean guild interrupted my infuse health 3 times in row (sic!) I started to think of way of countering :P. Thanks for help - I think it's time to include PD mesmers to our build.

It prevents you from casting now by interrupting you, right? Painful thing about choking gas is that the `arrow' does not have to hit you. Because of this, a blind ranger can still get the effects of choking gas - ouch.

Well, generally one of the best ways anyone can do to slow down choking gas rangers is using the terrain. On most maps there are corners and other structures that you can use to hide from arrows. If your team sees a group heavy on choking gas, make a conscious decision to fight near those areas. Corners are great for casters because you only have to run to the other side to get a few seconds of reprieve from the ranger.
Casters with a choking gas ranger on them can also back out a bit and pull the ranger with him. If done just right you can get that ranger out of wards or into a position where you can quickly spike him down. With most builds, at least try to harrass the chokers occasionally. Choking gas rangers can't really kite and do his/her job at the same time. Even if you don't kill them, you can buy your monks/casters some time.

Blind doesn't work on choking gas. Nor guardian or any dodge - that's what causes problem.

Make the ranger kite, a moving ranger can't hurl arrows at you. And yes I know that monks can't make a ranger kite, but use your ts/vent and tell the offense in your party to pester him a little.
On a side note they are a pain in the ass when I'm monking, but holy sh*t are they fun to play. That little click every two seconds is very satisfying.

Try to interupt him when he re preps the animation is very simple the ranger animation of crouching is quite distinct.Sometimes he will get the choking gas off so just run behind walls kite backwards so his in a spiking position.

/agree. Until anet fixes the problem of blocked or missing arrows still affecting casters, at least.

Choking gas only has 1 counter (interrupting it). That's why it's broken.

Cgas + Frenzy gives you about a second to cast a skill until the next arrow. Get hit with Cgas, Then cast your skill (orison, kiss, whatever), cast between arrows. Course, if you're against any decent ranger, he'll catch on. So the best way is to just...interupt it.

Compitent play:
Proper postitioning. Hide behind walls, and make sure everyone on your team is where they're supposed to be. It really does help.
Interrupt Choking Gas. If you're playing to win, you already have interrupts, use them.
Pressure the Ranger. Stick a Warrior them. If they're kiting your warrior, they're not camping you. If they're not kiting your warrior, they should die.
Time your spells. This isn't hard.

My favorite is probably to run up and shock em as they're sitting there casting their preps. they're so vulnerable and then so useless after you've interrupted
Leech sig too when I'm a monk. It's sorta like sweet revenge when groups let me run leech sig :> Mwahahah, chokers will hide from the Mo/Me!!! Role reversal!

Interrupting one prep out of 4 isn't really gonna help.

Cast in between arrows? Teams with significant numbers of CG rangers are not spike threats and aren't going to apply any pressure unless you let a ton of your spells get interrupted. Just make sure that your spells resolve as a monk and you'll be fine.
If you're a team that relies on a lot of offensive casters to work these things are annoying, be ready for a long boring match. But you deserve it for running caster spike. =)
Peace,
-CxE

*chuckle* Will that be before or after they let you dodge fireball damage? Choking Gas interrupts an area...why should blocking/evading/missing matter?
Choking Gas has always had a small place in my heart but it's just as far from uber as it's ever been, isn't it?
Maybe I missed an update.....?
