Default New to PVP

Ive had the game about 6 months now and ive explored most parts of the PVE section and id like to start the PvP section. I really have no clue wer to start. I would really appreciate it if some1 could point me in the rite direction and mayb help me make a step in the pvp section. My characters atm are Necro (ss/mm), Warrior (mainly used to shores farmin, was used for IDS and runnin), Monk (usually 55ing or bonding) and a new mesmer(only jsut lvl 20, i got IW and a kinda OK nrg denial build) Would really appreciate it if someone could just mayb give me a build that works ok so i can just try it out?

here's a fun mesmer build to play:

Blackout
Diversion
Shame
Gale
Shatter Enchantment
Drain Enchantment
Expel Hexes [E]
Resurrection Signet

This bar does not require a Superior Rune aside from vigor. You should have 14 domination, 9 fast casting, 5 air magic and the rest in inspiration. Go to TA and advertise youself as a "Gale Dom Mesmer LFG". Your primary role is monk shutdown and to keep your warrior (primarily) clean of hexes with expel.

I like to start by shattering (and draining if the monk is a Mantra of Recovery boon prot), galing them to the ground and then diverting them, following that with a shame, then blacking them out after that's triggered. It's a nasty build

advice before pvping:

- learn the pvp meta builds so that you know who to shutdown, who is shutting you down, or your team, how to do damage, how to avoid damage, and who your major targets are.
-learn to kite and pre-kite
-play a lot, lose a lot, learn from your mistakes, learn to anticipate your opponent's every move one step ahead of them
-learn that pve builds ususally do not make good pvp builds
-learn that there is no such thing as a tank in pvp
-read contemporary posts about pvp that can give you an idea of what your role will be and what you should expect to see other people performing in their tasks

practice, practice, practice, practice, don't get discouraged, practice.

If you are going to pvp with pve characters, I would make sure that you can have all the correct runes and weapon mods, or else, just make a PvP char.

Yep, that's why it's always nice to bring a PvE char into PvP, knowing it's perfect . Not to mention you almost always look better than the PvP chars in their crappy armor ^^.

Wait. You made a pvp character. And you MIGHT delete it? PvP chars ARE made to delete.
Don't waste that slot on a pve character now.

15K armour sucks. Just keep the pvp slot. IF you ever want to do decent pvp.

15k doesnt suck - it looks better than pvp armour, especially factions 15k - you can chose which function u want and keep the same art - i wish you could do that with prophesies armour.

ya it's always good to have at least one pvp slot.

ultimately though, pvp ready pve characters >> pvp only characters.

what he meant is that pvp characters cannot advance in any way...well they can gain skill points but since a pvp character has all the skills you have unlocked it is irrelevant. A pvp character can be deleted to reroll new pvp only characters, do not waste the spare slot on pve characters otherwise if someone wants you to reroll a class or role your other characters can't provide you will have to create a pvp only character. If all your slots are full with pve characters, you won't be able to roll up a character and may lose out on getting in a group.

ah i c so sorta like if you are asked to make a certain build then with a pvp character you can just log off, log on delete and create that proffesion? but if you had a full set of pve characters and you didnt have a certain profesion then it will cost you a lot to delete a character and make a new one?

Listen:

Keep one slot 'free' for PvP characters - these are characters you can 're-roll' to suit what your team needs. Think of them as disposable chars that you use when needed, to be discarded when you need to play a different role.

Your other 3 slots, if you want to play pvp with them, aquire all the skills (including Elites) and a good range of typical secondary skills. For example, Monk/Mesmer is very common in PvP so you should buy Mesmer skills too (in this case, in the Inspiration skills).

Then you need to buy different headsets for each attribute ( in the case of the monk : +1 Healing, +1 Protection, +1 Smiting, +1 Divine Favour). You can add Superior Runes to these (as most builds require 16 in one attribute usually). You will probably want two sets of armour (or more!) so you can equip your char for any role required.

You then need to buy, earn, steal, weapon sets that suit each role you play. A boon prot monk will want faster recharge protection items and/or 20% Enchant mods, a domination mesmer will want faster recharge domination wands etc.

So, getting a PvE char PvP ready is quite a task as I just realised after writing this, but when you get there, they are far better equipped than PvP characters.

I hope this is a little clearer??

exactly.

for example, I have 3 pve characters (of my original 5). The pve characters that I kept are the ones that I enjoy playing the most. I have a necro, a mesmer, and a ranger. The necro I primarily use for the times I do want to pve because I know I can get this character into a lot of groups and is fairly versatile in pve. I play my necro in pvp as well though, but not as often. I mostly play ranger and mesmer in pvp so I've kept these pve characters and fully decked them out to make them "pvp ready"

pvp ready means that you have all perfect items, runes and the necessary skills to play the intended role in a pvp setting. The advantage pvp ready pve character has over a pvp character is that they can swap out armor sets when they have death penalty (remove a superior rune to gain health), they also have the option of 4 unique weapon slots to swap to. I would not go this route unless you are absolutely sure you are in love with pvp as it can be quite a committment to get your characters up to standard, particularly if you play a warrior and require expensive upgrades and weapons.

anyways, practice in TA, form a group of friends who you like playing with and you will start to understand how to play the game, and then you can get into GvG eventually which is hot...once you really get into it, you'll be hooked for life.

Warm up in Alliance Battles or in Random Arenas

You can test your builds there without getting ribbing for being noobish

When you get to Team Areans or Hero's Accent your build is very important to your teams success and has to work with their builds.

In Random and Alliance its not as important, still important, but not as much. In Alliance there is normally too much going on for someone to notice if your build is helping or not. In Random well, its ramndom teams, so if your build fails to help you may never see those people again so who cares, the next team you get ramdomed into my work be a better fit.

Start PvPing with your PvE guy, find out whats working and whats not with a character that you are comfortable using and that you already know how to use. Test other euiptment, armors and runes out on a PvP only once you've got some practice in and have seen whats not working.

The "reroll" of a PvP only slot is awsome, sometimes I reroll mine a dozen times in a day as I try out different things (6 slots 3 PvE and 3 PvP for me) Its better that buying new armor and new runes only to find out you missed the setup slight and need to buy the stuff again.

And above all, like everyone said, practice like mad, lose alot, learn, reroll, practice
