Distortion isn't really overpowered, just annoying. But if you just keep pressuring the Mesmer he is going to run out of energy completely if he keeps spamming it. I like it as a stance that's always there when you need it. It's up to you and your team to make sure you don't need it too frequently. And its penalty makes it a fair skill.

You can always bring Spirit/Price of Failure but is not guaranted to save your life.

You can also knock down targets with distortion, by using Griffon's Sweep. It's easy to get plenty of damage by spamming GS with Irresistable blow or swift chop, using Warrior's Endurance as the elite to provide necessary energy. (with high enough strength, you can get 21 sec out of 30, with energy from every single hit). Same combo also works nicely against targets in ward against melee. So there are plenty in warriors' arsenal to bypass distortion's protection. Just look at other possibilities beyond those cookie cutter warrior builds. You will not get adrenaline-based spike, but with some thinking you can still do damage and even knock down targets with distortion. So there's no need to nerf distortion. That being said, I do like to see buffing of other underused defensive stances though.

The thing is, you dont throw up distortion when you have 3 bunny thumpers pounding on you, all that happens is you instantly go to 0 energy and still get hit a ton because of IB. Distortion is most effective agaisnt a balanced build, avoiding adrenaline spikes. So the ppl who are complaining about running into it when playing thumperway, i'm sorry to say but its just bull s***.

Though it's among my favorite and most often used skills, it is not a guard against pressure, by any means. On a ranger it is nifty due to the low cost and the ranger's already good ele armor, but rangers are often low on the target priority list, anyway (unless a flag is in hand). It's best use, IMHO, is after getting a shock or devestating hammer, or while an interrupt ranger is camping you.

Well yes if the guy just stands there and lets everyone Tigers Fury all over his energy pool then they'll be drained. But the people using distortion that would actually make it look like an exploit are the oens running around while throwing distortion up.
Even with Tigers Fury if someones running with Distortion, I'm not going to be landing much of anything.
That's kindof the issue though is Distortion itself overpowered? probably not, but once you run into a team where multiple enemies run it and still bring the normal amount of water snares, kiting, etc.. to the table it sure seems a bit cheap when you can't mount any signifigant amount of damage through your attacks while some guy runs around in your backline blackoutting your Monks and whatnot.

If Distortion was nerfed then you would be basically taking away the only good form of defense a Mesmer has against warriors. The rest are average.
It would also be basically giving Warriors and Rangers a buff since there would be fewer ways to combat them. Both those classes are deadly as it is.

Your both probably right.
This mechanic is sort of lame. Im not totally sure, but I think elemental weapons were implemented to balance Conjure skills some how.
If this is true, that intent is completely lost today.
And then... if people arent worried about how its being utilizied (well or poorly)... it doesnt need attention.
tisk tisk
Maybe we could lose elemental weapons replaced with this-
Conjure Flame
Target ally loses all enchantments. For 8 seconds they are wielding a Fire weapon and attacks strike for an additional 1-16 Fire damage.

Although I decided to not read everything.
Distortion last short, and cost 5 energy each activation and -# energy each hit evaded, along with short recharge.
Comparing it to all other defensive stances, distortion is by far the most expensive stance there is. While being expensive, it was able to return its cost to good efficiency. It is a very balanced skill cost/effect skill.
While other defensive skills such as whirling defense is also very balanced in its cost/effect, where it being cheaper and not spammable.
However, considering how this game work with regen and etc, there are no way to justify the use of whirling defense over distortion when you have some illusion point. But, in that instance, you will be using a few extra point away from your main skills just for distortion. Of course, one could say those extra left over point is useless anyway, so why not illusion magic? That's the flaw. Anet doesn't provide us much choice to use our left over attributes, and distortion is one of the skill that the left can use well, and very well.
