considering the pvp community has been pretty much begging for the ability to purchase UAX. I'd say it's a pretty good idea.

Think about the new people who saw the game in Leipzig and went out to buy it or all the new people that buy Nightfall. If they want to get into pvp they are faced with 1000 skills to unlock and dozens of hours of faction farming. Without this unlock option, new players would never be able to catchup and high end pvp would suffer from lack of new players and start to die out.
Opposition to this is something I would expect from those disgruntled PvE whiners who gripe at everything Anet does, and who have nothing better to do. This game is supposed to be casual player friendly and this will help freshen up pvp more; you wont see as many W/Mo's with mending (maybe).

As a strictly PvE player - this is what the PvP community has been asking for!

You aren't forced to buy it, if you want - unlock the skills with Faction.

from the standpoint of someone who wants to PvP without grinding out all the prophecies skills, this is a god send. Not only that, you can just buy that instead of the propheices campaign, since PvPers don't really care about the content in PvE.

Oddly enough, people seem to be confusing unlocking skills with actual player skill.
Farming RA, and general PvE play both let you unlock skills. Running around with a mending wammo is all it takes to get balth faction or gold/skillpoints, and suddenly people are claming this is somehow compairable to PvP skill. That does not follow at all.
Selling unlocks is not compairable to selling PvE gold/items. The goal of PvP is not to earn faction to unlock skills, the goal is to win. Having more unlocked skills at your disposal does not teach you how to use them, nor does it infuse you with the player skills necessary to defeat a high ranked guild.

I originally bought this game more than 1 year ago along with 8 other people with the clear intention of playing mostly the pvp part. Most of these people left after only a month, disappointed by the fact that they had to grind their unlocks to be competitive in pvp. I can only imagine how this game would have been positively different if this feature had been implemented from the start. It's a little late for this, but it's better than nothing I guess.

yes coz if you dont have money to buy guildwars, you wont have the chance to develop that skill. no money means no guildwars and no guildwars mean no skill.

think of the new players who will just hop in to pvp immediately after buying the game and skill packs (and will get owned anyway or not if they got SKILL ).

I'm really curious, since when did unlocks define skill level of a player?

Period.

It takes almost a thousand hours (unless you're ultra-super efficient) to unlock everything in the game. It takes a few hundred to unlock everything needed to play anything right now. Yes, it takes too damn long. No, this pack still isn't worth it.

Interesting, I wonder how far this can be taken. After all, there is nothing wrong with it. Permanent access to elite missions for $49.99 ? Sounds good if you can afford it.

Probably a response to the simple fact that you're simply not nearly as competitive with only Factions as you are with Prophecies, regardless of class, and it's less to spend $10 on a class than spend $40 on Prophecies just to fight on even turf. And perhaps that people who are completely uninterested in Prophecies' PVE and see it as a chore, can skip it entirely and just get the skills for the same price.
And then there's the actual skill selection. Almost every good Warrior, Ranger, Mesmer, and Elementalist elite is Proph-only. The Factions elites are for the most part terrible, except for the Monk elites which are godly. Crushing blow, tiger's fury, contemplation of purity, blackout, power leak, wastrel's worry, distortion, shock, windborne speed, meteor shower, and shard storm are Proph-only. A ton of staple necro abilities are Proph-only, and the Factions necro abilities suck.
Okay, so the new monk elites own, but that's about it. For the most part, anyone with only Factions is a good step down from anyone with both, or even people with just Prophecies, so this is probably as much a consolation as a shortcut. :P

Your charging people 40 bucks for the game and another 40 bucks to get all the skills in the game. To be honest most if not all of the pvp community is already uax with all the skills from the first guildwars release. Me being a part of the pvp community i had to grind out all my faction im currently hitting 700k balths faction and missing some random factions skills. What premades where out there when i was unlocking skills healing hand wa/mo's with mending, boon heal monks not prot monks heal monks, warriors with frozen burst, kindle arrow rangers with greater conflag nothing standard. Now for people looking to jump right into the game what premades they got they have shock axe warriors, cripshot rangers, support e/mo's, boon prots pretty much standard pvp stuff, npc gank assassin's pretty much standard pvp stuff. For people new to the game they dont have much of a grind with these premades around.

I like them selling unlocks in the online store. There are some issues with pricing and not being able to buy some key stuff, but overall I like.
Peace,
