I read this somewhere on guru before; forget where now, a piece of advise which i had already being doing withouth realising it and without realising that unranked people might not think of doing and it is as follows:
Join a random Pug, play untill it disbands and watch the people in the team, look for the people who seem to know what they are doing or even just friendly guys that you would like to play with again.
Now add these people that are good/friendly to your friends list.
Do this for a week at the most and you will have found yourself a list of regular friends who you know are good and you can either a) msg when your pug needs another person or b) use this list to form a pretty good team.
Any group of unranked friends who you have played with before and are decent players, will do better that any r3+ pug any day imo.
I have told this piece of advise to about 10 people now, some; some random ppl in HA pm'ing me asking how i got my rank, some from a really old guild i used to be in and guest for sometimes for gvg, whom im still friendly with. And most of them have msg'd me back after a few days saying ''thanks alot for the advise it worked real well i got xx amount of fame and im really happy with that ''
So i hope this helps a few people have a more fun time in HA or even get there rank 3 and more.
Gl all who have read this and plan to use this in some way!

That's EXACTLY what I say to people, and besides, Rank doesn't mean anything, Rank just means you can get into a high ranked pug, and friendlists are better than pugs anyday. Also if you're good and you play with people that are good they can see that, there are loads of r3 people playing with r9+ people just because they're good.

Yeah.. personally i doubt that, You can't get a chance in a r9 group at r3 unless you know the leader of the group personally or have a guildy in it. I know that from experience.. I'm rank 6 now.

Heres how I did it.
Lie. Pretend you're r6+ when you're r3. If you get on vent and it sounds like you know what you're doing, they won't care or ask you to emote, and you'll probably only get kicked if you suck.
-or-
Start your own group. Back when I was pretty low ranked, I didn't want to iway and was tired of sucky pug ranger spikes, so I would start my own r6+ group. If you're a good leader and you can play well, doesn't matter if you're low ranked. (btw my groups would own with balanced spike, necro, ranger, ob flame, pp/sd, 3 monk ftw...was back when it was still Tombs though)

Thats true, half the people that will join your balanced//spike or whatever you are running won't even bother to ask for the leader's emote. They just assume.

Rank does mean something, it represents the number of victories that you would have had. However the way in which you got those victories determines if your rank is actually representative of your skill or not. ie those iway tigers are just meh. you see high ranked ppl do stupid things, like warriors taking heal sig and rc prot monk taking price of failure, and its those that devalue rank.
My advice would be to play a good amount of balanced and various roles, that way youll learn more and improve, and you will do your rank justice.
As for those who find it hard to get into teams because they're low rank, best thing to do is to find a guild that does HA. I was struggling for a while on r1 and couldnt get into pug teams, but that's all changed now
good luck to all you and dont reduce yourself to iway/vimway

great advice from the topic starter, i would also add that if you are just starting out dont give up so easily or get annoyed about losses, most of the good pvp teams know that every day yo are in HA you WILL LOSE, nobody wins every game just realise its all about experience gathering to start with.
dont give up, if you lose get back in and try again, you will start to learn from your mistakes, some people faster than others.
rank does mean something - as stated not so much a player's potential rather his experience, and experience win games as often as plain skill. however on the other hand, there is a limit to how far experience will take you and i would say that happened for me at about r7 or so, after that you pretty much play on "autopilot" vs lesser teams because quite simply you may have played against their build many times and you exploit it the same way every time.
learning the bulk of popular builds in HA helps, there is a metagame for HA and it will prepare you for fighting most teams if you read up on it and know weaknesses in certain builds ie vim or iway are popular builds, if ou can adapt to beating every vim and iway you fight you wont be donig too badly.

imo this was a waste of time, since the get go, i add ppl who are friendly and go with them questing in PvE and fighting in PvP/GvG. I understand this is helpful and it does work, as i have gotten over 100,000 luxon faction playing with ppl not from my guild. but i still have yet to gain much rank. it seems i am plagued with the rage-quiters =(
anywho i guess my point is that if ppl need to be told this, they don't deserve the help. this is the basic of basics.
had you included the type of groups you had most success with or what you noticed some of the problems are i wouldv'e enjoyed this thread, but you didn't, so flame, flame, flame.

You see my point was that you add the good people from the bad teams you go into, the idea is you join a random team and pick out the 1 good person out of the 7 other party members, add them and do this over and over untill you can make a team of 8 friends who you know are good.
There was really no need to 'try' to flame since you didn't really read properly or get my point, if you had of gotten my point and done this before as you said this is the basic of the basics, you would no longer have to sit trough terrible teams getting no rank, but be forming your own teams of friends and mowing trough teams in ha
My idea for this thread was to give some of my own advice, but more importantly to let other people comment on what has worked for them, to build a thread of ideas of how to be succesful in ha.

You might be surprised... If you've ever played late at night, a lot of higher ranked people join lower ranked groups due to slim pickings. I also Sometimes join r3-6 groups simply out of boredom, or let lower ranked guys into my groups if they're polite and seem knowledgable... some of those guys have made it to my friends list.

Then you are most likely letting the balnced team down because you probably arnt good and/or you havnt played most of the maps b4 and played a wide selection of builds.

The OP's advice also works when ur ranked. If you make friends with a higher ranked player than you, chances are you might get invited into his group someday.
Furthermore, play what not many ppl are playing. In balanced/spike monks are hardest to find, in iway oop/ooa etc etc. You'll find teams a lot faster that way. After all, you're one of the few who's playing it (relativly speaking of course)

if you VIMWAYed to rank 3 doesnt mean tha you havent played PVP... most of balanced groups wont accept anyone under rank 6, so the only way to get there is joining unranked cookie cutter groups, and VIMWAY is the safest bet
if you have no rank it just means tha you cant get in HA groups because you are not ranked. GvG, still exists, and you dont get rank from winning.

I have to say Maria The Princess, that is probably the best and easiest way to get up to rank 3, because that's how I did it lol.
There are ALWAYS people shouting LF vim/iway so you can join hop on anytime, and if there aren't, create your own vim/iway and you'd be surprised how many would join. The vim build itself is pretty easy to use and doesn't require an awful lot of co-ordination to get going.

Yeah, I VIMed my way to R3 and now I'm stuck there. But now I pretty much just play fun builds with my guild group and don't just play for higher rank.

Actually, that's a lie.
I have a friend who's r3 (I think r4 now actually) but he's played with and held with people like I So Glow and played with people from iQ and stuff like that.
The way you do that, is being a good gvg player and getting into a guild that likes to do tombs every now and then. He's a good gvg player, and people know he's good. So they don't mind taking him in their r9+ groups even though he's only r3. Seen it many times tbh.

If I recall, I So Glow is only r6 or 7 and can only run bspike, so I'm not sure why you'd even mention him with the likes of iQ?
