I've quit playing GW over a month ago and haven't posted here since. Some things I'm about to mention are a bit off-topic but IMO worth mentioning. I'll try to choose my words carefully to prevent ranting, flaming etc.
Why I started playing GW?
First: I never played a MMORPG before so I was really curious about it. I started playing about 1 month after the initial release of GW. Interaction with other players was nice and friendly. More importantly, players had the feeling of accomplishing stuff with other players. Using henchmen in those days was out of the question. Players rather waited for a real player than taking a bot.
Second: It was in those days that I started to make my first GW-friends which later evolved in a guild. A funny coincidence was that half of them lived in the same city as I'm living in. We actually meet eachother in real life and see eachother regularly. Back to GW. Playing with friends made me even more enthousiastic about GW. We got to know eachother very well, developed our way of playing, helping eachother etc etc. GW was turning out in more than "just a game".
Third: My introduction to HA (at that time Tombs of Primeval Kings). Huuray, I'm starting to get on-topic .After 2 months of PvE I was starting to get a bit bored. A guildy of mine was playing HA and told me I should try it aswell. At first I was a bit reluctant cause I feared I would mess up things. And I did mess up a lot! However, my teammembers (all pugs) helped me out and told (i should say write, ts/vent weren't common those days) me what to improve and how to adjust my gamestyle. The group stayed together for over 20 rounds all willing to help me understanding the basic princeples of PvP.
It was there that I made my first PvP-friends. Farming fame was a non-issue back then. Rankdiscrimanation hardly excisted. Especially after we got on ts/vent things were getting cool. The fact that they came from all over the world was also awesome. We were all having a laugh and were playing for fun. We did try to play as good as we could however. But it was voicecom which made me get to know my friends in a very personal way. I decided to join my friends pvp-guild since my other friends were sticking to pve. By playing with pugs I got to know some other cool people with whom I played often as well.
Why I decided to quit GW?
This descision didn't occur on a sincle day, lots of stuff presceded that.
First: The introduction of FotM-builds and the overusement of them. It weren't the builds which annoyed me, I didn't care if builds were "skilled" or not. It was the fact that battles were becoming the same more and more. Appart from that, me and my friends (or should I say everyone?) were forced to build in counters to those builds, limiting our options to try things hugely. When IWAY started to be so dominant 4 spots were virtually unchangeble (3 monks and a warder). We just accepted the situation and decided to play a different build every day. One day IWAY, next day balanced, next day something completely stupid etc etc. This helped us keeping things versatile and enjoyable.
Second: The attitude of many players changed. At first GW was a real community, after about 9 months or so many people started to become more individual and less friends towards others. Playing with pugs had started to become an exception for me.
Third: 6v6. Being fun at first (yay, something new, we like new things) it was starting to get boring very fast. Why it got boring? Read all the threads which adress why. Appart from that we were faced with a huge problem. We were a very tight group and suddenly 2 players had to be excluded. We solved it by making somekind of schedule but it just didn't feel right. We didn't like to play GvG so that wasn't an option either. After a while we became less active (myself included). The game just wasn't the same anymore. We kinda lost the fire to keep us going. Not surprisingly many players started to quit GW.
Fourth: The introduction of Hero's. This has all been discussed as well in other threads.
Only 1 thing can bring me back to GW.
And that is if my friends who quited will also come back. I knew these guys for over a year. For me they are irriplaceable. Like in real life, it takes time to build a relationship. But, I'm keeping hope. You never know what's going to happen.
I'm very sorry for this extremely long post, but most likely this will be my last post here and I wanted to make it a proper one. I do want to say this is my personal story and in no way I wanted to use this post to make other people quit the game as well. I wish you guys all the best, many of you have given me a great time that last 2 years.
@ Anet, I wish you guys a lot of wisdom.
I share the same view as the person above, I started HAing with guildies, who not only explained to me the concepts of PvPing but also help me understand my mistake and work to correct them. HA was fun, the flaming between casual iwayers or balancers, or the degree of competition I faced between friends in other guilds. It was awesome, people who I didnt know, became at the same time, my friend and my enemy, we were always trying to see if we could beat each other in the next run, and hell, even if I did try every single build, it took me a lot of time, to understand their weaknesses and strengths, and that they did actually require skills whether iway or balance. I met people that I liked, and am still in touch with despite the fact that most of us, left the competitive aspect of gw, hell gw itself, to focus on other things. We werent the best, but we were having fun, playing a competitive game. A true competitive game.
I tried coming back to gw, with my little r5, which took me one hell of a time to get while my friends were r6/r9+, I was happy that I actually worked hard to get it sorta, I step into HA, 6 v 6, heroes ... I never understood what was going on, every group I got in, were even worst than the overused Iway or bloodspike, ppl who never HAed b4 were doing it, fun, but whats the point? of all this noobiness pollution, pardon the use of wording, but honestly, I couldnt stand it ... and went back to buying nf, just for the sake, of playing a new campaign with some old friends ... and my gw days, would be over once more.
But still, it is wrong, hero's reaction time needs to be nerfed, and it also seem they are super smart knowing what enchant you have. If you run a tainted flesh necro hero, he will know if you have tainted flesh anyway even if you have other enchant on you. I mean, would a person know if tainted flesh is still on if there are other enchant on his ally?
yes, necro enchants are green, and if it's tainted, then there's not likely other necro enchants =D
most prot monks run lots of enchants (rof, channeling, holy veil)
and mesmer enchants got a purpleish swirl, monks are light blue with that symbol on it.
Meh. Ive loved everything in the game so far, and loved farming fame with heroway, and so did the people I played with. Now thats been nerfed, im still playing the game, but just not making anywhere near as much as I used too with heroes.
I used to get 3-6 even more consecs per run with heroes. So far ive tried dual smite, mysticspike, SF, balanced, none of them have gotten me anywhere near as much fame as my heroes did.

What a tragic story.
/signed for moving to Lyssa's Fiction like Scout's thread about PvP credentials.

indeed a tragic story...
playing with / against heros will be boring. you don't understand the point of PvP. HA with heros had nothing to do with "teamplay"
and dont worry, zhed shadowhoof wont forget the great time with you <3

Could it be that heroes did most of the job for you ? I wonder how good of a player you are.
And goodbye, you won't be missed.

Dual Smite has been nerfed pretty bad, barely anyone plays it anymore. Mystic spike blows, SF is scrubway brainless button-mashing, and balanced doesnt even exist more. The reason you arent getting any fame now is because the average quality of teams skyrocketed after the limit of Heroes in a team, especially in the earlier maps, so incompetent people who played to farm fame with heroes arent likely to make it anywhere as they dont have any team skills required to play in a real human team.
