Yeah, but it was late my time and I think benson had to wake up at some ungodly hour.

Well we were very nice to our euro opponents. WE basically gave them their time, just barely fielded a team of 8(we literally broke out the henchies when people started showing up), and they still had a mage henchy with them. With the weekend, there were reasonable hours to play, but things are only going to get uglier, in my opinion. Also, as I feared, given the frantic aura around our match, everyone in the guild forgot to get screens of the first win... team obs mode ftw I guess...

Well in Holland its spring holidays atm which makes it a bit easier for people to play on impossible times provided they don't have a job.

I had to set my alarm clock at 2:30 AM to be ready at 3:00. I'm glad the other monk accepted to play infuser.
At first, we thought the other guild was abusing the situation but changed our mind as the discussion progressed. They are a small guild and simply unable to field 8 players at other times. Even at what should have been prime time for them, they could only field 7 and we agreed to play with a hench as well in exchange for playing Sunday night instead of Monday night.
In any case, all the arguing, exchange of mails and so on looked too much like work for my taste - and unpaid work for that matter.

I think this talk of "making" the other guild play at ridiculous am is rather unreasonable. Yes it sucks but a significant amount of the time there isn't much of a choice, a lot of our members don't even get out of work till midnight GMT. So when facing a GMT+1 team it's going to suck for them.
There's little other choice, people can't play during working hours, however, they can probably adjust their sleep schedule. And if they can't then they shouldn't have signed up for a global tournament. Imo.

Exactly, it's a lot easier for some of us to get up at 02:00 than it is to skip work to come home and play a match in the middle of the day.
Anyway, I can see a lot of teams defaulting already, and I doubt it'll get much better. On another note, what happens if you're expected to challenge a guild with foreign characters in their name?

our fallback hour was 5am for us...luckily the american team understood us and aggreed at midnight..thought anet is making it obvious that they favor american teams. 3GMT IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE TIME for all european teams. which btw are the backbone of the ladder...

To be completely honest, I think that the Am vs Eu fallback times were the only reasonable ones. It's not because Anet favors America, but rather because they are hoping that at least the matches will happen. If our game were to be set at a time that was European primetime, we would have to forfeit. No questions asked. It would be in the middle of the day and we would have 0/8 players. I understand that it sucks to have to play in the middle of the night, but otherwise, there would simply be no game. On the other hand, if the Americans were forced to play at 3:00 am, then it would still mean that Europeans would be playing at 9:00 am. That doesn't seem much better because I assume that people will have things to do and will have to adjust their schedule for that anyway. Shitty for both teams. If any European guild wants to play in the morning of their time, I'm sure we would be more than understanding and instantly volunteer to play in the middle of the night. However, as it stands, playing Am vs Eu in Eu primetime is impossible.
That said, we tried to work with our schedules as much as possible and try to pull the match earlier than the fallback time. Our match against [Poke] will be at 23:00 GMT tonight, four hours earlier than the fallback. According to some of their guildies, it will still be hard for them to make it, but it really was the best that we could do, especially for our west coast members.

We're able to get our team 3 hours before the fallback and that's with 2 of them leaving work early. Which is still 1am our opponents times and they doubt they can all make it . It's a bit of a shame really but what else is there we can do about it

Perhaps would it make more sense to have the fallback time occur on a week-end. Of course the definition of week-end varies but for me, Saturday is much easier than Tuesday.
With apologies to Muslim players....

Seems to me that this is always going to happen given that it's a global tournament.
However, it might have made more sense to have at least a few rounds of swiss vs. other teams in the same time zone to minimize the pain, then have some cutoff to a global swiss round. You'll have the usual unfairness inherent in any regional system but it's still better than all this either 3am or people at work crap.

According to the emails being circulated by Anet, the 3AM GMT is going to be standard fallback time for the rest of the tournament (Eu vs. Am). It's a pain, but as Tommy said, there's really no better alternative. Excluding the 'regular' working times of between 7AM->6-7PM doesn't leave much choice and really HAS to be done.
