They should have been fine against hexes, they had a DH silly :P
But to answer the question, as a monk singularly you won't be able to do much (especially prots) and if a build has that much melee/monkhate it really depends on what if any utility the rest of the team carries to counter it. Wards are out (which kind of sucks :/ ) and with a DH it would be harder for a water ele to do his job. I think I'd go with a Blinding Surge

If I was playing warrior or something vs them, or mesmer, I would not need daze - but people don't know how to interupt.
Due to the fact they didn't really have AOE damage - standing in ward of melee would not have been such a bad thing.
Sure monks alone wouldn't of been able to do much. They arn't meant to vs that kind of team though.

Spike builds are not hard because they can be infused, its just when its broken tower with a spike vs spike vs spike when its gets annoying -_-

I dont think its a case of any major skill abuse in HA, its just killcounts, you either spend the whole game running around the map because both teams seem to love eachother and would rather spend the duration of the game bashing on your hero or you watch some braindead SH/SF teams nuke eachother into oblivion stealing pretty much any kill you go for.
On any map but killcount the games were good, any necrospike shit was easy wins 1v1, with 2 shields up the para noobs were laughable and nuker teams got owned by mirror.

Depends how much defense you have in your build and how good the monks are, pug monks are awful in HA so often you do need more.
