Kill count is a cancer in that it is not only a retarded mechanic, but it alters the entire build philosophy of HA. That is, wasting slot(s) on support puts you at a disadvantage on these maps and may actually hurt your team. Run 2 dom mesmers, force a double team, and the other group with all pressure takes the kills due in part to your shutdown. That's just one example, but it just limits the type of builds you can run, which is unfortunate.
Bottom line: Alliance battles failed for a good reason. They're terrible. Why force the mechanics into a once (somewhat) respectable pvp arena? Makes no sense. Sounds to me like someone at anet is desperate to justify his/her AB idea. Eliminate this objective -> build options increase -> fun ensues. Though I would prefer traditional altars in HOH, I can live with the rotating objectives if kill count gets the axe from broken and courtyard.
