There's alot of Icy Veins spikes and thumper/spirit builds, but there's also fire eles...
Basically, it's all pretty lame, balanced is the way to go, and it ALWAYS owns the gimmicks. But it depends how you want to play, fire ele's = free fame.

Paragon spike and ranger spike are the 2 most popular, mainly because they are easy for the scrubs to run.
Balanced is definately the way to go atm, it takes more skill to run but you only really need 2-3 copies of shields up and your build is meta-proof so your already gonna beat 60% of the teams in there.

I challenge u to go balanced and get to the hall of hero’s… 8 out of 10 u wont survive killcount
Eventually U will get there but not as easy /fast as with a spike or “gimmick” witch is a big word because gimmick are builds that work and are used a lot for that reason.
But anyway even tho I like to play balanced myself it doesn’t get u anywhere in Ha to day

Yesterday playing balanced, i think we faced a few SF teams (all quite easy, though they're harder in kill counts if the 3rd team is retarded), like 1 Paragons spike and LOTS of Rangers + spirit builds and most ran by well established HA guilds/players. It's usually something like 2 thumpers dazing, 1-2 Smoke trappers, 1 oath shot spirit spammer (QZ, EW, Fertile, NR, Tranq... the joys of playing balanced in that kind of environment), 1 defensive spirit spammer Rt and 2 N/Rt or 1 N/Mo + 1 N/Rt.
Overall, it's EXTREMELY annoying to face. Games tend to last forever and just trying to pressure is a pain cause you get bodyblocked by pets, spirits and run into traps constantly and you absolutely can't tab through targets. I gotta say i hate this thing much, much more than any kind of spike build cause they make me wish i WAS running a spike build (something i hate) just cause this way we could kite around the map and try to score kills somehow instead of having to pressure through all that junk. Even with 2 rangers carrying DShot/Savage (no choking though) it was nearly impossible to control the spirit spam + trapping going on.

Im not quite sure what everyone here is complaining about. From the moment i tried HA (which was a long long time ago) to this day, HA always, and i mean, always had a very boring metagame. Call it lame, or whatever, i call it boring. Im not gonna mention GvG, im gonna mention TA, which had 50x more fun environment and metagame. Hell, AB and RA and FA are 3x more fun than playing in HA even if you do get to HoH.
Im glad that HA exists, it's nicer to play elsewhere.

Servent can i ask a question please. When did you try HA because its been over 10 months now since anet sabotaged it and decided to taunt the HA community. So for 10 months HA has sucked so if it was not before these 10 months of absolute suckage then you have yet to experiance the real HA which is why you probley are not a fan of it and is why we are so politely complaining.

why can't people be creative and make a brand new build instead of always follow the meta or just lame spikes. ㅡ,.ㅡ is there any fun in just copying off everyone else's build?

Oh I'd accept the challenge, but it'd be REALLY boring doing it :S
Facing the same gimmicks again and again is pretty lame, unless you have a build that wipes them real fast.

Thanks for correction, some people don't understand that splinter weapon do not damage the target but only adjacent ones... no utility for spike.

Pure spike builds are always fun at first. That, and the perception is that HA as a gametype is "ftl". So there is no desire to improve or play builds that gain you respect, (Non existent) both of which typically require playing balanced. And that is obviously ftl.
I prefer lame spikes because the bars go down fast, and because they are generally more successful imo with bad players. Winning is always fun.
I haven't actually seen SF groups accomplish anything of significance though..para and invoke spike builds are hella popular, jimway groups as well, along with your assorted pure spike builds. Rspike ftw, amirite?

because of observer... it's a great function and its nice to watch the best of the best play but people abuse it and thats what it comes down to... happens in gvg also... reapers mark, migrainer and a burning arrow anyone?

You can make your own build. Don't expect builds to actually work unless you have an ingenious mind.

HA (or Tombs in the old days) began sucking when the 1st rangerspritspams started . From then it went down and down and down. It became so dumb that i really have no clue how sane people would play more than a day without boring themselves to death...
It`s really not only 10 months that HA is sucking. It perhaps appears so for the already dulled and addicted fame farm holding build players but in reality it`s sucking for about 20 months now.
And to don´t be complete offtopic: look at observer and you`ll see the most common builds nowadays.

There may also be the fear of failure when testing a new build. Getting steamrolled by a common build might discourage some people from trying.

I have no problem playing builds that aren't meta. Generally though if these builds are successful, they use a lot of the same templates. And ele will probably be using hella aoe ala the fire and earth lines, invoke, or hella water snares like icy shackles/water trident. Actually, that kinda seems like there is some differentiation. But anyway, the point is that the only people playing these builds are higher ranked (~enforced) groups. Unless you are in a guild that does HA mostly (look at the other thread to see how that works out) you won't get a chance to pug different builds. It all basically comes down to people not caring, so why take longer than is necessary to set up when you can roll jimway? That was excessively long.
