pvp arenas in gw2
If you've spent any time reading through the Gladiators threads you will find that pvp'ers are not happy. Ha is dead, GVG is dying, hero battles are complete crap, etc etc etc. There are many problems that are too blame for this, and skill imba is one of them. But what about the actual arenas that we fight in?
In gw2 a-net has a chance to completly remake the pvp community and the battle isles, or whatever they're going to call it. With this comes the oppurtunity to completely redesign all the arenas that we fight in. If ha is crap now, is that only because of skill imba? Or could it also be because of things like fake relic running, rt spike abuseing ghostly hero kills in relic running, etc. Given the chance, how would you design heroes ascent maps? Would you keep them as 8v8? or maybe change them to 6v6? Would the ghostly hero still exsist? How many maps would you need to go through to get to the hall?
And what about the other types of pvp? Would random arenas stay 4v4? Would hero battles still exsist? What about gvgs?
Maybe if the arenas in pvp today were not as abuse-able (ha, hero battles) then there pvp woulden't be abused as much. And if they weren't as stupid (ha relics, alliance battles) then the pvp community woulden't be so unhappy.
This is not a thread for flames about how lame current arenas are, and i don't want to hear that arenas aren't the problem, skill imba is. The concept behind this thread is to hear ideas on how pvp arenas could be improved in gw2, and maybe a-net will listen. Then again, we are in a pvp forum, so guess not

i think it'd be cool if in random arenas in guild wars two you could set the nuber of players you battle with. like next to the enter battle sign there could be enter 3 v 3 random areans battle or enter 4 v 4 random arena battle etc, up untill 6v6. i also think that they should have some sort of larger battle, which is more oraganized then an alliance battle. 16v16 divided into two teams of 8 on each side would be lots of fun

It really depends on the system Anet decides to implement. With different skills, levels, and gameplay, it's pretty hard to predict how big these arenas will be.

in Gw2, anet has removed HA, TA, among other things. What we do get is a mix of AB/RA and GVG. Have fun.

I like your idea for ra battles, but there are some problems with it. Ra is the place where alot of new players learn how to pvp. If we make it so ra is not noob-friendly then these new players will have nowhere to learn. The problem with a 3v3 match in ra is how much more the skill level of each individual player matters. in 4v4 you can get away with having a new guy playing the game with the starting bar he's given (escape, flame trap, etc). But in 3v3 the skill level of each player matters so much more that it would be alot more difficult for new players to win, which is not what we want from ra. When we look at 5v5 and 6v6 it becomes absoultly critical to have a monk on your team. in 4v4 you can get away with self healing and good resses enough to get glads without a good monk, but in 5v5 and 6v6 you really need one. also, the more players there are in a random envimorent like this the greater the chance someone will leave, ruining it for everybody else on the team.

Read up on Mist Battle already. I think it makes the horror that is RA completely obsolete.
I'd like to see a few modes for organized play though, a 4v4, 8v8, and even 1v1 might be viable depending on how classes are done, as they have already talked about making classes much more self-sufficient so that people can solo without henchmen. (and presumably monster scaling)

wuzzman you seriously have no idea what you are talking about do you. how can you possibly know whether there are going to be arenas like ra/ta or not or something similar to HA.
All they have said is that for pve players there will be the mists where you can take your pve chars and have objectives to work towards so even complete noobs who have no idea what they are doing will be contributing more than if they weren't there. This will introduce pve players to the pvp side easily (thats the idea anyway). This is the bit people are comparing to AB.
Then there is the PvP part of the game which will basically be completely seperate. Only PvP chars can be used in PvP and everything comes fully UAX. From this you can guess rewards will be like the current reward points where you unlock skins/armour rather than skills/equipment. They want everyone to come in on an equal footing. PvP skills and PvE skills will be kept seperate from the start so theres no problems with balancing between the two.
As they are creating two very distinct sides to the game, it's pretty safe to assume they will put a decent amount of content in for the PvP side which will be built on as the game progresses. So different forms of the arenas/HA and forms of GvG is all perfectly reasonable to expect.
However in response to the OP, i think its pretty much impossible to say what you want in GW2 when we dont really have any idea how different its going to be from GW1. GW2 definately sounds like theyre going in the right direction though.

Well thats all fine and dandy, except they made clear there will be NO PVP CHARS IN GW2. Rather, your regular PvE guys get all the UAX benefits for the duration of their organized PvP play.
Personally that makes me doubt you're going to be able to unlock any kind of skins, but we'll see. And there was absolutely nothing said about seperating PvP and PvE skills, and it seems very unlikely that they would be. Also, the "PvP" portion you are referring to was explicitly compared to GvG. There can easily be more organized modes going on than just GvG, but that is how the team has described it so far.
For someone dissing Wuzz, your post is full of Fail.

Well I may be wrong about PvP and PvE chars, perhaps i misunderstood that part and PvE chars will have full access to PvP except they will be UAX in PvP. But UAX includes skills and equipment so taking a PvE character into a PvP town then suddenly being able to create any equipment for it and having access to all skils which then disappear when you return to PvE seems a lot more unlikely than having seperate PvP characters. There is also the fact there may be no level cap in PvE whereas in PvP everyone will be the same level and so not only would all your equipment and skill access change but your level would too.
However the rest of what I said is right. They did say they will seperate PvP and PvE skills, the 50 skills coming in GWEN that are PvE only is a step in this direction. Skills like lightbringers gaze and sunspear rebirth signet were the first step towards that.
Yes they described the mists and a form of PvP in line with GvG only. I made it clear in my post that considering the effort they are putting into seperating the two halves of the game, it's pretty likely there will be more than just GvG. What they did not say is that there will be no kind of RA/TA/HA etc which is what wuzzman said when he has no idea whether there will be this kind of PvP or not.
So the only part of my post which possibly fails is the PvP/PvE character divide and even then, taking a PvE char into PvP would practically make it a different character with skill, equipment and level all changed.

LOL. Ignorance is bliss. What was stated was 2 modes. Random/AB world pvp and GVG. Thats it buddy. You can continue to think that anet will transfer those arena's. But anet considering how key this modes of pvp are, did not include them in their list of pvp modes they are working on. It is safe to say they don't exist.
I really don't care about their being or not being pvp only characters. It was a major feature in GW2 and I don't think that will change. As far as GW2 is concerned its nothing that pvp'ers should rejoice over. It adds nothing new(they would have told us if it did...even plenty of may or may not pve features were spilled by anet), and substracts what was.
Maybe the prospect of reworking or simply deleting class's all together might seem appealing to the people on this forum, but its basicly saying " Pvp'ers are not worth(3 years of proof of that fact apparently) our development time, lets just create some end-game zone for pvp'ers to run around in and call it day."
I'm starting to wonder if Anet is asking themselves this question "Why are we taking so much heat from barely 10% of our player base?". I think GW2 and the lack of pvp content answers that question for me.
