The reason people hate gimmick builds is because we like PvP, most Fotm builds are overpowered and are all too common, go to HA now and see how many Spirit/thumpway players you see, that's not fun, it's fighting the same crud over and over again, so yes, I would recommend staying away from HA till it's fixed. Start in TA if you want to learn team tactics. Join a PUG alliance and get in as many games as possible. Learn what play styles fit your team the best. Fill in the roles and form a core team. Core team is the same players doing the same roles every game.

if you are completely new to pvp then RA is a more reasonable stepping stone

edit: but you must keep trying to progress, look online at guides and such because there are some ppl who can play for a long time and dont really get better

How does that meta lack skill? Build variance is what makes the game interesting. A meta with a lot of diverse builds that are viable tends to be a balanced meta. How is a rainbow spike different from the other spikes you listed? A build doesn't have to be overpowered to be gimmicky. The thing that upsets you people are overpowered skills/mechanics, not gimmicky builds. It just so happens that some gimmicky builds exploit those mechanics/skills.

Yes. I coordinate things with my teammates in RA all the time. Sorry, but if you go into RA and just hit things or make red bars go up you fail. Besides, you aren't going to find a good team in TA without PvP titles or friends that are able to get you into those sort of groups. I wouldn't take advice or tactics from the average TA group, because I've witnessed how much of a massive failure most of them are.

I don't even know why I'm trying to prove a point on guru, such a waste of time.

Yeah, I'm sorry that I'm a bad monk because I t-space the called target without thinking if it has SoD on it or not because you know...I kinda have better things to pay attention to. I'm just saying if you can't see luck plays a big part in matches, you probably don't have enough experience in terms of matches. There are MANY matches determined by a lucky crit kill on a monk to base-rez, or hitting your agonizing chop through blind because someone just hit you with bsurge, etc. etc.

Without all the gimmick crap, the current meta can be said to be fairly diverse. Though most teams run with 2 warriors, a ranger, and 2 monks, the runner can change between E/Mo and Rt/ and the last 2 spots can be filled with bsurge, different kinds of mesmers, or paras. There are also teams running with dervishes and split guilds that are fairly successful as well. I don't see your point.

Because rainbow spike does not involve everyone using the exact same skill and having the power multiplied. Granted, there's not much pressure involved, but it's a big step towards a balanced build with spike calls.

So fairly diverse, but yet 62.5% of each team is the same. The 'different kinds of mesmers' all have almost the exact same skillbar, all paras are the same except for maybe 1-2 skills and all bsurge eles are equal too. So we now call a meta diverse when there are some slight differences in 3 slots of a team? And even those 3 slots are often similar. Seems we have a different view on what is diverse then.

OP: I would agree with Haxor in terms of starting in RA. If you look on websites like pvxwiki.com you can find builds that are commonly used in "higher" PvP and get used to playing them so that when you think you're good enough you can find a GvG/HA guild and start PvPing with them.

Oh and Vent is crucial.

I'd hit FA, if your build has even the slightest amount of synergy it will probably be able to accomplish at least 1 task properly there and you can learn from that
