It's quite nice, there were many better things I'd like to have seen them do, but it's better than nothing.
Main problem is people who aren't UAX wasting faction on keys, meaning that the gap to get good at pvp is made even larger. And tbh, pretty much every pve-er who might play pvp is going to choose the chance at crystalline swords over unlocking random skills.
Only thing to resolve that would be making it so that only UAX people can use the chest, but then I can see the people that aren't UAX talking about how unfair it is, so I guess you can't really win.

There's a lot of other things I wish they would have done with it, but this isn't too terrible to be honest.
I'm happy, no doubt. But not as happy as I could be.

The chest will only impact PVP areas like Ft Aspenwood, AB, and RA. It will have no impact on getting new people to play in TA, HA, or GVG. This update does nothing to address any of the reasons why the bulk of the gaming population avoids TA, HA, and GVG like the plague.
Overall the Zaishen chest is not a bad idea. Makes for a nice faction sink and will keep casual pvp alive. However, I do feel the more hardcore pvpers could use something else to spend faction on.... I'm just at a loss as to what they would need that they don't already have. Maybe just keep selling keys to PVE players and use the funds for invites.

keys should be non-tradable imo. people selling keys for 2k+ to pve'ers doesnt really encourage them to pvp. It should be an exclusive pvp reward, not something you can buy if you farm another area enough.
Quozz, i somewhat agree with you, it will influence casual pvp alot more than the higher tier stuff but its a start. you're probably right, people still won't turn to the bigger arenas... i think it will influence a small handful of guilds but thats about it.
whatever though, any change to attract new people to the pvp player base is a good one, right? just remember these rewards are the bait of pvp. once you get into it you realise it's much more fun than pve can be and thats why you stick at it. not for the rewards gained.

I still did not get why you people are so bothered whether others will or will not get UAX.
First, anyone who wishes to PvP will get the needed skills, regardless of that chest. To give an example, "Joe" really wants to GvG with his guild and his guild, like any other, has a very strict build. Joe will, as he wants to GvG and as his guild requires, unlock the needed skills before thinking of chests. He will be able to play that build like UAX player can, even if he uses the remaining faction to buy keys. He will just have to grind a bit for more faction should the build be changed, but who hasn't done that?
Second, it is in everyone's right to PvP just to get the chests (something that isn't smart, since one will most likely get a creme brulee). In other words, you should not care if "Joe" PvPs only to get chests or to be a top pvp player.
Therefore, restricting the keys to UAX-only is a stupid idea.
I recgonize the chest wasn't what was expected, but it's better than nothing. I doubt it will persuade old-time PvErs into PvP, but it will give the newcommers a reason to.

Any system that gives me PvE things that I can sell for 1.4 million gold is okay with me. Now I get to go out and buy... errr... more PvE things! Maybe it's not a perfect system, but hey, it's something!

The general chat in RA today seems that everyone thinks the Zaishen Keys are a nice touch. So that's one area that appreciates the change.

There are some salable items in that lot, so in a round about way A.net have created a mechanism for PvP only players to fund guesting and the purchase of Guild Hall bits and pieces.

Except it forces PvPers to be merchants, something that most people don't want to do.

If you farm loot, you will have to sell loot. Most PvEers don't want to be merchants, either, so the fact that it sucks and doesn't involve playing the game is not an excuse. Happy merchanting!
Lovely update.

Here's the problem. For PVP newbies, the faction should be spent on skill/item unlocks, not on keys. This makes PVP a part of "the economy," which is NOT good for PVP as a whole. I don't doubt that the Q&A forum will soon have topics concerning the quickest place to farm Balth Faction.

that actually is a very good point.

Should possibly up the faction on gvg now that it has a use since you get way more from doing scrubier things.

HA is probably the only PvP thing that rewards more faction/time than GvG, at least so it seems to me. Obviously GvG rewards will be lower if your guild rating is lower, but it should still be significantly higher (~1500-2000 every 30-45 minutes assuming you win ~50% with 1000 rating) than AB (few hundred every 15-20 minutes), RA (150-200 every 5ish minutes assuming you win ~50%), or FA.
But I think it shouldn't allow you to obtain keys with balth faction until you are UAX, or have some sort of requirement, or else it'll just turn into a farming thing, and not actually promote new PvPers.

So I got some keys, and eventually found where the chest was. I got two gold drops and a whole bunch of... consumable crap. First I had to get someone in my guild to ID them for me, because I don't have any PvE characters or gold. The weapons were both max and inscribable, so my guild mate told me I should keep them and upgrade them as they were rare skins. Sadly I don't have any mods to upgrade them with.
*shrug* I guess I'll.. give them away. I can see how this system is intended to reward/encourage people who play both sides of the game, but it doesn't interest me.
