But it doesn't provide any incentive to TA or GvG over RA, which isn't anywhere near as good.

One thing leads to another. I started in RA meself.
I'm glad I have something to do with excess faction, personally. Other things would have been better, yes, but this is better than nothing.

Everyone knows all the true PvPers are secretly in love with PvE items. Great chest! On a side note, if you rather get gold, you can always sell the keys. People have made hundreds of thousands to 2 million gold off these things :P

would you rather have nothing to do with 3k tournament tokens?
it would be nice if people got to UAX before opening the chest, but i know that if they had this before i was UAX then i would have a hard time not opening the chest, i think most people would.

Well a chest that drops PvE items for PvP players isn't exactly a new concept. There has been one in the HoH for quite a while.
I think as time goes on, and more people report the extremely valuable items that can drop from this chest, many of you will be changing your mind about this one. There are rare items that can drop from this chest that you cannot get anywhere else in the game. Others that have proven to fetch a fine price in the past.
I assure you, it is not all Crème Brûlée and lockpicks. It's like a Guild Wars slot machine, and I can't wait to hear about someone hitting the jackpot.

In my 5 cracks at the chest, I got:
- Creme Brulee
- Creme Brulee
- Firewater
- gold Grim Scythe r11
- gold Pyroclastic Axe r12
Pity about the reqs, but yeah, there's some good stuff in there, if you don't mind getting sugar and alcohol most of the time.

I have one friend who got an R12 Voltaic Spear, another who got an R10 Crystalline Sword, and an exceptionally ecstatic friend who got an R9 Eternal Blade. Their luck is astonishing, but that's what the chest is capable of dropping.
I'm glad there's another use for balthazar faction now, but I also agree with the sentiment that it should be for UAX only. Otherwise, the influx of all these rare golds into the economy will nuke GW's already teetering economy into the pits. Also, PvE'ers will be too obsessive over getting Keys instead of doing the true reward: crossing entire professions off for unlocks. I remember RAing to R1 Glad (old system). I got Gladiator with all items, all elites, 7 professions unlocked. Switched to HA, got the other three finished off in short order. Going UAX at 699k was quite rewarding.

This is probably the best thing they could put in place to try to get pve players to try PvP, and hopefully continue doing it. While it doesn't offer much of a reward for those who exclusively PvE, I dont think that's who they're catering too. They're just hopefully going to get you more matches during American times.

I think it's a decent addition. I would have liked an alternative way of unlocking skins for my pvp chars though.
As to money, these keys are still selling for 2k, that's plenty of guest invites per key if you ask me.

Surely 5 tokens for one key would be fair :P
Dont get me wrong, 100 tokens for a key would still be better than none at all. But I don't see why us people who have had to dump balth faction into tokens should then have to spend it with a massive markup - if they ever do decide to make token trade-ins.
my first run of keys:
2 Firewater
1 Creme Brulee
1 some crappy req 13 fire wand
1 lockpick

Good Addition to give people with UAX something to spend their faction on.
I went and got 12 keys right off.
1st drop-Q12 Voltaic
from then on it went downhill with firewater and non elite tomes. A couple golds here and there that went right to merchant.
All in all good idea, but this is gonna kill the value of a lot of rare items. 2 people I know got req 10 Crystalline Sword's on first set of keys.

maybe Anet's decided to stop trying to cateer their pvp ONLY to pvpers in PvP?
This game used to--in the far distant past--cater to PvE players who PvPed. PvP was the end game, and the reward for decking out a PvE toon to PvP ready status was that you got the baddest mother on the block to beat down pvp only folks.
With our new friend "J" there's less reason for people to ever leave their PvE area to PvP...and that can (maybe it hasn't, but it can) contribute to fewer people actually PLAYING PvP.
Catering to the hybrid players is hardly a "bad thing" imho since Anet spent so much effort to wrangle us into this game in the first place. If you don't like this chest idea, sorry.
GGs
EDIT: just want to say this too. balth Faction is way too easy to get to drop the price to 1k, much less 100f. I think the 5k cost is a bargain compared to watching it piddle away every time my team gets a kill.
I also sorta support the UAX idea but with reservations. I know people who run frontline all the time have little use for monk elites, but getting people to unlock skills is better than having teams suffer because they blow everything on keys. Still, thats a player/leader responsibility (if you need skills, stop blowing faction on keys!), and Anet might not want to police their population to that extent. So I'm on the fence there.
drops for me
1 max strength and honor (forgot what I salvaged it off)
1 r9 dead scepter
1 r11 crescent axe
1 r11 shadow staff (DF)
1 monk tome
4 creme brulee
1 earth wand
