Monks in AB
I finally upgraded to Factions. What is the role of a monk in AB? Is healing protecting any good or am I better off smiting? Or even as a kiter?

All characters should kite against melee.
Smiting is all-around just bad outside of a few skills (scourage enchantments/healing) that aren't too useful in AB anyway.
Just go ZB prot/WoH prot hybrid and you'll be fine.

Stay with your team. #1 rule for monks. Stay with them and heal them as they need it. Don't go smiting. Go Prot or Heal, and then just stick with them and you'll be fine.

Wacht out. In your team there will be some dumb Wammos and lolsins. Patience is the #2 rule for AB monks.

Note that this is easier said than done, as the average pug will split in eleven different directions after the first fight/first cap. If that happens, and it will, just pick the most competent player on your team and stick with them.

Simply put, either take the time to get in a good group or don't use your monk.
Monks are phenomenal to have in a good group that sticks together, and terrible in a group that doesn't.

As others have said Monks are fantastic if you have a good reliable team...and are near useless if you have a bad group. A good team of 4 with a monk can hold off 6-8 players under ideal conditions but if a monk loses their team (or vice versa) then they'll spend more time looking for who needs healing/proting than actually doing it.

You can smite, ignore these people, they obviously believe that the only good a monk can do is smite.
In AB, run what build you want, but make sure whatever it is, is effective at whatever your goal is (cap, kill, w/e) and stay with your group.

Yeah run smite, do mediocre damage, and get your ass kicked in no time because you're a monk.
The only smiting build I can see ran is a Strength and honor + JI + dervishes + another source of healing. And you'll have a really bad mobility. There's no point in being able to super kill anyone if they run faster than you and cap back the shrine you just took.
So no, don't smite if you want to not suck.

But I thought the point of ABing was to cap. What's the point in tanking?

who said anything about tanking?
you get in a shrine and whipe out those who try to kick you out of it. than you move to the next shrine and repeat...
its not called tanking, its called kicking noobs in the butt...

well, a skilled healing can be useful in a (preferably guild) ORGANIZED group. if the group stays together, jsut you 4 and you bring the monk, then you can do some serious damage as long as you avoid mobs because other teams usually split up in under a minute enver to be seen again. and all you have to do is stay together and youll bulldoze over any stray enemy/ cap shrine.
organization > nubs

Good start to a bar, I would swap in spirit bond for prot spirit though, just because of the ele shrine. Would also throw in return and a hex and condition removal.
Oh, and your Avatar is <3

Learn to protect shrines. That's the most important role of an ab monk imo.

i once played a monk, and managed to spawn 4 npc monks on the resurrection orb shrine with the resurrection orb. i ended up farming the same two teams over and over again for the rest of the match. absolutely hilarious.
