My reason is not a need, it is a desire. Maslow ain't got shit on me. I play to fight. The fight is everything.
I would even go as far as to say that I have given up MANY a "need" to fulfill this one desire, both in RL and online. Maslow's "needs" are not really all "needs", a lot of them are "wants"...

Because guild wars is the best online game ever made despite the frustrations we've experienced due to questionable maintenance in the competitive aspect of the game.

When I played, it was because it was fun to play with the people I played with.
Had I not enjoyed it I would have stopped playing. As is, I was forced into that anyway, and am pretty glad because the game took a turn for the worse thereafter.
I still log in every so often to talk to people I played with though.

Do you still play?
Also, had a post that was deleted by a moderator who probably didn't get the message of it...
The idea was that the lyrics I pasted in that message represented the drive of the people who play competitive GW and those who are most active in these forums... the idea to win and to be better than the rest...
"I look at you, then you me
Hungry and thirsty are we
Holding the lion's share
Holding the key
Holding me back cause I'm striving to be...
Better than you (Better than you)
Better than you (Better than you)
Lock horns I push and I strive
Somehow I feel more alive
Bury the need for it
Bury the seed
Bury me deep where there's no will to be
Better than you (Better than you) ho,
Better than you (Better than you)
Oh, can't stop this train from rolling
Oh, no, nothing brings me down
No, I couldn't stop this train from rolling on and on on
No, no, forever holding on..."
(Metallica - Better Than You)

It was less than one month ago when I said I do, as long as I can have fun. The problem is, lately I haven't been having fun and found myself logging on just to sit there, declining guest invites and eventually logging off to do something else.
Be it the terrible balance, be it that I need a break, but the game suffers from a disturbing lack of "fun" for me at the moment.

I played because I loved the competition. The thinking and skill against hundreds of other talented players was great, especially when it counted (playoffs). The losses were painful because we tried so hard, but the wins were exhilarating. It was also fun hanging out with guildmates I enjoyed.
I didn't play for money. Although I won some petty RL prizes, the money was more of a joke than anything (divide the $ I won by the hours I spent and I would have been a lot better off working at Burger King). Of course, I didn't win a trip either, and that would have been a fun experience.
I also didn't play for titles. Title humping was the worst part of the game, one that should have never been introduced, not even fame. The only things that should matter are your GvG win/loss record, tournament standing, halls wins, and so on. Never smashing a bar for a pellet.
Basically, it was the same reasons why I played sports in high school -- competition, fun, comradery.
