I got my first ranks with balanced as well, in unranked balanced teams. It was the age of the IWAYS, so same thing I guess.
You just need to use your brains and know what your skills do. Still you need some monks that can hold up, but they will learn it anyway. And infusing doesn't matter. If you play sway or balanced and you are bad you will lose vs spike teams anyway.

Way back in the day I farmed up to r3 in iway pugs. Press buttons, collect fame, i'm still a terrible GW player. I agree completely with the person who said all it amounts to is a number on an anet computer, if you just farm points in broken pugs with shitties you don't get any better. Only quality part of online gaming is learning to play well with people you enjoy playing with. Anyway what's it matter now? I usually play in the morning after an overnight shift and HA is empty.
