Groups form fast
Your skill improves FAST
fame starts slow, but then comes really really fast

regardless of build played

Get friends who you enjoy playing with. Play with them often. Find a build that you guys are good at. Get fame.

Think about what your priorities are. If you want fame without getting much better, roll a R/D and say LFG. The fame will come. But try doing different things. It may be as simple as running one of the healers or trappers, anything to get you away from c-space fame. Learning how to be better > getting fame mindlessly.

yeah i like to play something fun, and don't like the r/d
i mean it DOES get fame but its boring.... me and a few friends tryed balanced and its just perfect altho i think we'll need lots more practice

Most of it has already been said, but i would like to emphasize to play with the same group of people all the time. Make your own build, suck at the beginning playing it get better at it and pwn some faces, until it becomes meta

r3 play some stupid gimmick that takes no skill
r6 play a lot of broken stuff every day, like r/d farm
r9+ play balanced with the same people

i dont know where you been but if you go id1 all you will see is a bunch of R/D's rank spiking eachother. farm underworld with them, you dont have to be ranked

yeah if you wanna play balanced you are putting yourself at a disadvantage. dont expect to start out playing balanced, im 100% sure you will get more rage quitters than you do fame when you start. you have to be pretty good to pull a TRUE balanced againts all these gimmicks imo

Haha recently i've come across quite a few teams running 4 healers though, it is quite lame and think it really reflects how shit the meta is at the moment....

Take this mans advice, balanced wont work without good players.

Ranger spike is good for r6-r9, if you find some scrubby guild thats willing to farm 24hrs a day with ranger spike you will be rank9 pretty fast.

The traditional warrior, 2 paras, mesmer, fire ele and water ele works really well once you find skilled players, i was playing it last night and it pretty much stomps any build out there, even the gimmics like ranger spike are easy to beat purely with pressure, the only time we actually needed to call spikes was against a pug that had gvg monks that dont get out pressured by a single fire ele :P

Would be nice if they werent forced to run all that defense, but they dont have much choice. They have sway on one end of the gimmick spectrum, and hexes on the other end. It is VERY difficult to put a build together that cockblocks both of those.

Sway is fine as is, just boring to face

4 healers are fine, just put an off mesmer interupt somewhere to help with aegis/DA chain they might decide to include in it.

Hexes would probably be fine if frustration wasnt a migraine copy.

Rspike is fine, has a bit too much damage but then again it wouldnt be a spike if it didnt.

yeah rspike is good played it a few times, but rarely seen it win halls, or even get past temples...atleast while i played it...the only HoH wins i got(which aren't quite numbered

), we're with a balanced team.. so don't know bout rspike, since most of the ppl who play it are R's - no offence ment
