It wasn't VoD that was the big difference tho. Actually, rawr was outsplitting (or trying to) dR all match and actually went in with a npc advantage. That they use 4 monks, a rit and a sigsmiter for that is another story. Then at VoD rawr just had a major build advantage of course. But it was one of the most entertaining matches with rawr in it for sure.
And for the top 8:
rawr
dR
sup
Nap
StP
mkay
EW
SpNv

I wouldn't say mirroring characters with 4 monks, a rit, and sigsmiter can really be called "outsplitting."

He probably didn't :P
We underestimated the ability of Polly to destroy NPCs with one swing of his axe, and that's what costed us a lot of NPCs in the first 2 minutes as well as a later push by you guys into the side. Nice job swinging us around and taking NPCs from the side that didn't have enough healing.
P.S. I'm still bitter at you humsigging my searing flames that swiss match we won on corrupted. I need to do big damage!

I know, but I didn't know what else to call it. After all, if you ignore what characters they used for a moment, they did kinda outsplit dR. The build they used was incredible lame tho, I can agree there. Wouldn't surprise me if they ran it just to counter dR. No real way to stop if either if you don't know it is coming. So basically rawr proved they can win buildwars too.
Most worrying will be which conclusions Izzy makes after the tournament. From his point of view he can probably argue the game is decently balanced at the moment.

So I hold no illusions as to our victory; to be honest we just went into that match going "Well it's play-to-win time, we're going to either see an attempted rematch or Dervspike, and we really just have to out-abuse it." and the fact is Dervspike (along with most spike builds, actually) are quite weak at VoD barring a massive Morale/NPC disparity.
Hence, you push that advantage and do what you can to force the game out of their comfort zone. If your enemy is going to insta-gib you with uninterrupted 1-frame spikes in 8v8, you have to split them and run them around until you hit VoD, their weakest point. Granted we had to do this with 2 monks, 3 smiters, and a rit, but we weren't ready to take needless risks in split (though we actually took a lot of stupid deaths :P).
So in conclusion, sorry about that bad build, but put the gameplay in that match under the microscope and there was actually some good play to be had. The quintuple-AoE double derv spike in form at the opening of VoD comes to mind... (Completely on purpose, I promise! D: )
Now, off on another tangent for prospective mAT contenders: The key to victory is getting up at the crack of dawn, going out to breakfast two hours before the tournament at a nice open-air cafe with friends, and then grabbing a slushy soft drink on your way home. Mmmm...

I think sup vs dR was pretty embarrassing too, no? Considering you turtled from 1 minute onwards and we played it like byob and suicide rushed for NPCs

Yeah, damn those American servers
It's dumb how a lot of high-end games are decided by which server it's on.

This monthly crept up on me, so I had the pleasure of coming on to see that the final had already been played and decided, and I had some nice GvGs to obs. Gratz to Rawr, it was an interesting final.
I enjoy watching GvG but am fairly clueless about the more advanced nuances of the genre, could someone explain why Dervspike is less useful at VoD?

If the other team has 5 healers and a sig mes and the match lasts to VoD, its kinda GG.

Casterspikes, and to a lesser degree builds with 1 dervish (especially the derv, ele, ele, mes, monk version) have less dps than a regular 2 melee frontline. If you have low dps you kill npcs at a lower rate, and lose VoD. dR's 2 dervish version is not gimped to that degree though. They only really become inferior when out of form.
