Tips for a mesmer new to GvG
Okay, so I'm fairly new to playing mesmer in GvG as my guild is mainly pve based but lately we've getting a core group of 8 - 10 people interested in PvP or having some pvp background. But anyways I'm just wondering if a person who plays mesmer at a high level could give me some advice on some questions I have. Like what do you have your skills binded to on your keyboard? What's the general play style of the mesmer? Do you watch for skill animations? Etc. Any advice you could give me would be great. Thanks!

1)Tab until you see opponent mesmer.
2) Spam Diversion and use interrupts on him.

as a mesmer you have to have good knowledge of the skills, like every skill and what each skill does. you have to be able to realize which skills are more important to interrupt/disable. for example is it more important to interrupt diversion or backfire? You also should be able to keep an eye on everyone on the field, this is THE hardest thing to do as a mesmer. You have to be able to see anytime someone is casting an extremely dangerous skill. this is just the start once you gain more experience you'll learn more
P.S- observe mesmers in high-rank GvG matches. these can teach you a lot

to learn how to watch the battle feild as a mesmer, best place for that is ha tbh, but ha is a diffrent kettle of fish.
but if running power block in gvg, aim for easy to get skills on the prot monk ( aegis / gauriden ) and then switch to the heal monk and ( while using a 40/40 set) cast, Diversion ( watch the hex syombol to see it disapear) Shame (watch the hex syombol to see it disapear, and if your lucky to get a 40/40 recharge on diversion,) cast Diversion again, then try and p-leak the next skill using timeing of when the hex goes. either the monk will cast through both/either diversion (disabling 1/2 skills) and if he eats the shame and you get a p-leak on somthing he will have little / no energy. but if you do power block the prot monk make sure u call it on vent, so your caller can call spikes like a crazy mofo.

i wish they have an interrupt trainer in the isle of the nameless, this will allow ppl new to interrupting to practice. an NPC that cast 5 sec spells, then 2 sec, then 1 sec, 3/4 and 1/4 so you can learn to interrupt.

I liked this quite a bit:
http://www.virtual-dragons.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=328
Obviously parts of it are historical but if you think in the present (e.g. [Blinding Surge] versus [Icy Shackles]), then you should be okay.
In retrospect, maybe not a great comparison, as you can't regularly p-leak the [Icy Shackles] mesmer..

In addition to what everyone else said... also divert tainted, sig of removal, bsurge, any powerful spammable skill you can get your hands on. If you can't divert tainted, inspire it and cast it on your own party.
Don't let their mesmer use his diversion. It's a 3 second cast you should be able to pdrain or pleak it almost every time.
When a spike is called, Shame, Diversion, look for a pblock on guardian. Wait for the WoH and pleak. Shatter.
Stay in your 40/40 set when casting and be very careful with positioning. Switch to defensive set and kite when necessary.
The hard part about mesmers is that you have a lot to do, but you can't shut everyone down. You have to make a lot of decisions about what is the most important thing to do at any given point (e.g. shut down water ele when trying to push a flag, shut down warriors when under heavy pressure) and that requires knowing a lot about what every skill is doing as well as good reflexes and battle sense and timing. I'm still not that good at it actually. But spamming diversion and shame on enemy monks usually won't win you a match.

cookie, that is epic Fail, but anyways.
Here is some small skill examples, what your goals are.
Dont be afraid to use [skill]power block[/skill] a good mesmer with this can ruin a whole backline [skill]signet of humility[/skill] on the WoH monk. And power block the RC.
Otherwise more examples down below.
If ->[skill]energy surge[/skill] is on your bar.
use it on the monk with -> [skill]word of healing[/skill] on the bar, together with your [skill]shame[/skill] to drain him out of energy.
most likely that u got [skill]energy burn[/skill]aswell, use on same target
Use [skill]signet of humility[/skill] on the monk with [skill]restore condition[/skill] to cause more preassure. since the deep wounds from spikes wont be removed as fast. Can be used on both monks OFC, but from my exp, without power block, the Rc is the better choice to humility
Use [skill]power drain[/skill] to regen ur energy, it has a long recharge so dont waste it trying to inter [skill]word of healing[/skill] for example, if u arent sure u can do it. If miss, u gonna be low on energy, and less effective. u dont want that since ur a highly important player as mesmer.
Tips is to use it on easy things [skill]aegis[/skill]is important to prevent from going up, AND an easy +21 energy from power drain
[skill]Diversion[/skill] is the best mesmer skill there is IMO.
You want to divert KEY skills like [skill]word of healing[/skill][skill]restore condition[/skill][skill]blinding surge[/skill][skill]steam[/skill] skills that can cause the other team to wipe, if they get it diverted.
[skill]shatter enchantment[/skill] for spiking (good monks always pre-prot)
You as mesmer always want to tell the other in your team whats going on with the opposite teams backline.
*Are something Diverted? Tell the team to push forward if skills like [skill]word of healing[/skill][skill]restore condition[/skill] are diverted
*Tell your team if the opposite monks are low on energy, you only do 45 dmg with your [skill]energy surge[/skill]?? HE IS LOW ON NRJ PUSH! only stole 4 nrj with shame? PUSH
*Is something camping you? A ranger interupting every diversion? a mesmer constantly [skill]power leak[/skill] your diversions? TELL your team whats causing problems, and they should try to preassure it, so u can get some skills through.
*IF u are good with interups, good ping? USE IT nothing is better than a good [skill]power block[/skill] mesmer. Or someone constantly P-leaking WoH.
*be fast with ressing, as mesmer u most likely gonna run with a hard res, res chant for example.
*Remove Conjures, and Attunements (this useally needs a bit help from other in the team, or its hard to notice some times)[skill]inspired enchantment[/skill][skill]drain enchantment[/skill] most commonly used for that
[skill]Power Drain[/skill][skill]Diversion[/skill][skill]Shame[/skill][skill]Signet of humility[/skill][skill]shatter enchantment[/skill] should Always be in a domination mesmer build.
Hope this helped a little bit, didnt bother reading much of what other people have posted.
But this is some basic things u need to know if u want to be a good mesmer.

Thank you pepsi that was one of the most helpful posts I've seen in this thread.
And I'd worked out some of what was said just by playing a mesmer. But I still have one question, what keys do you have your skills bound to? =/
