just as a heads up for OP, though he might already know this:
the damage reduction on shield of absorption is cumulative. that means the first hit is reduced by 5, the second by 10, then 15, then 20, and so on.
that's why people recommend on it, since it rapidly reduces damage on a single target to 0.

I did give him a long heads up as to what the essentials of a monk bar were before he worked one out. I had pushed for gole but in the end he went for something else. Basically, told him rof and guardian had to be included, to chose from ps or sb, to have condition and hex removal, and to have a big heal.
Now I watched those ra matches and although his weapon swapping is not yet remotely perfect, he seems to understand why it is good now.
He still only runs from meele instead of properly kiting, and hexes easily overwhelm him. On the other hand, he is, for as little as he's played, way better than I was at that point. Hell, I was still using hbreeze at that point. On the other hand, there was noone there to tell me why it was bad.

During my testing period in Random Arenas, I tried to follow advice given to me by the person who talked me into getting this game, but before the very first match, this one guy started verbally assaulting me for having a sword and shield equipped and told me only noob monks used a sword. I tried to tell him that it wasn't my casting set, but he called me a noob and quit. We managed to win that fight mostly because our Dervish was a killing machine, but after ten wins, we were massacred in under 20 seconds, I don't know if they just paired two 10 win teams or what.
My first question is: am I really a noob for having a sword and shield set? I really liked that set because every time some mesmer tried to steal my energy, I never had more than 25, and almost always I was only at 4-10. Also, I always took less damage than when they attacked me on my wand and focus set.
Second, I was also vilified for not having a resurrection skill, but again, the person who talked me into getting this game said monks shouldn't carry resurrection skills.
Third, should I keep playing random arenas and alliance battles, or should I try to get into more competitive forms of pvp? My map says I have random arenas, team arenas, and hero battles, but I keep seeing "XXXX team's has won a battle in the hall of heroes" and would like to know what that is all about.
By the way, here is the build I was using in RA: hope it's not horrible, but the access pack only gave me 20 normal skills to unlock, and 20 elites
1 reversal of fortune
2 zealous benediction
3 guardian
4 shielding hands
5 spirit bond
6 dismiss condition
7 revealed hex
8 Power Drain
Had Protection at 12, Divine Favor at 9, and Inspiration Magic at 9. I was tempted to unlock healing skills, but I looked at warrior and dervish skills and didn't think the healing skills could possibly keep up with the damage potential of those skills.
Don't even know if this is the right section to post this, but like I said, complete newb trying to get advice from people who already know something about the game.
Oh, and if someone could help me out a little in game, my ign is "Scarlett fries U"
Sorry, I'm a little long-winded.

I read the OP and was like wtfhaxxorskillz, you're doing everything you should be doing fyi. The people bugging you are bad and will remain bad. I salute your skills at understanding the game better than some people who have owned this game since day 1.

that's kind of my thinking too. are you sure you're new to the game and not some 2 year player looking for some pats on the back???? seriously though, you're already better than me and i've been playing for two years. one helpful hint, turn off all local and team chat in RA.

qft, he's even spoon-feeding you guys what you want to hear ("Noticed that those who were brave and just stood there died really quickly, I am more of a coward and just ran from the warriors and assassins chasing me. Guess being a live coward is better than a dead brave person.") No harm in it though, at least sets a good example even if this prodigy praise is undeserved

You know, when I read through the original post I was like "Wow, this guy must be joking". I'm not going to say that's really the case though, because he might just be legit, in which case I salute him.

And suddenly a glimmer of light shines.
You'll grow very quickly out of AB and RA if you play and listen to people that do know about the game.
Or you already have done that, and this is the best Aprils fools joke that was ever made. in July.
PS: Shiz is a bit confused in his beliefs, which you can see at the staggering low level of his taunt towards the Luxons.
We have giant turtles with guns on top. 'nuff said.

Thanks for the links. I read some of those articles but came away somewhat more confused than before reading them. A lot of the acronyms used I have no idea about, though Darknecrid (I like shield of Abs better than shielding hands now), Ranocht and Kaelyn from the forums, as well as a few others in-game, have been really helpful, have translated what some of those acronyms ae, and have come along for a few alliance battles.
I finally tried Team Arena, but couldn't keep up with so much pressure from assassins who remove my enchantments and any stance I use. I guess I'll try again when I get a microphone and an actual organized team.

Shattersins are tough. All their attacks are unblockable. As a monk you need to rely on your teammates to shut them down, as they can cut thru anything monks do, and in TA thats usually your necro or your Me/N.

Scarlett,
If you want to dive into more organized PvP, check out www.teamlove.us. We're a network of guilds working to develop the GW PvP community and we have an entry level GvG guild that might be suitable for you.
Best,

everyone but Tigros post was pretty much worthless. Without a guild you aren't getting any where in HA, and without a competitive guild your defiantly ain't going to enjoy gvg. Even with a guild I don't know how you will stomach the sudden drop in build diversity when you get out of RA and AB. I would go to TA and TA only till you find a decent guild then move on to HA and GVG.

If anything, you can PM me in-game. I'm a PvP vet (played for 3+ years), I'll answer any questions. If you really are that good, I could probably get you an invitation to some PvP guilds (if you're European, otherwise you should probably join teamlove see post #36). My IGN(In Game Name) is under my name to the left.
Also, I'm curious to see if you're for real.
