+5 Spear/Sword sets
I realized something today. What's the point of sitting on a +5 spear/sword set if you never cast in it? You may aswell sit on a -5 set to hide energy and negate some energy loss upon death.
My epiphany. Discuss.

+5 is nice when you actually want to, you know, cast in your shield set.

+5, 20%ench Sword
+45Ench, -2Ench, Q8 Shield, +16Armor
Mo/W: Shield Bash, Balance Stance, Guardian, + heal skills.........put 8 in Tatic and you gain max benefit, 16Armor, from holding a shield.
And to combat the energy zapping memser......I carry a +15-1 Eng offhand to get a quick +27 energy if I need it.
I use a Shord/Shield combo on all my casters.......unless you want to wand someone to death.

Agreed, i always use -5.
Spose it'd be justifiable if you're just infusing against a spike, higher hp etc.
Then again i suppose its more for lazy/bad players that can't weapon swap and play effectively when up the shitter.

You use it sometimes against a spike team, when you are forced to sit on your shield set almost all the time and you might need the +5.

I usually use the shield set for:
1) Stancing or stance type stuff.
2) SB / PS on myself.
3) Patient / RoF / Infuse.
That's a pretty narrow list, but it's a useful list nonetheless. I pretty much swap for everything else. If I'm playing RC I'll usually take a +5 and a -5 as my default sets, but If I'm playing WoH I usually default to -5.

Also, with stuff like RoF and patient, it really doesn't matter what set you cast it on. If you really need the extra recharge on it or higher duration of RoF, then there's something wrong.

It really depends on the situation. In a match with no edenial, using a -5 set over a +5 set is simply dumb, since you're losing 10 energy that you could use in a defensive set. Against a team with moderate to heavy edenial, of course you'd want your -5 set. For perhaps over a year up until the past month, you rarely see edenial (at most one esurge or eburn). At least 75% of the matches you might not even encounter it outside of shame. Afaik, Tommy, Langola, and I (and I think dephria and tarlisan too) all have used the +5 set extensively during that period, but maybe we're just bad. I dunno.

i normally camp +5 energy melee weapon with +7 armor vs either ele/physical damage and a corresponding shield...only swap to 40/40 set when rly needing a halfed recharge/fast cast.
i also carry a low and a high energy set with those 2, so i have trouble when i need fc and hr heal AND prot sets...

Adding on to Divine's post from a RA perspective - if you use the negative energy set as your shield set, and you are on less than 60 HP with some degen, then switching to a cast set to cast WoH / ZB will kill you. On the other hand, if you don't switch you can't cast, which is deadly when you're already on so low HP. And of course, if you're using Shield Bash or are a Mo/W, then you want to stay on your shield set all the time (i.e. use the +5 energy spear).

Can someone please explain why you would want to have -5 energy? I'm a total newb.
Saw this Migraine build on PvX and figured I'd give it a try (only played very little GW before) and according to the page you should have:
1) PvP Spear of Fortitude, Brawn Over Brains inscription, with a PvP Shield of Fortitude with a +armor inscription
2) PvP Spear of Fortitude, I Have the Power! inscription, and the shield from above
3) PvP Illusion Wand of Memory, Hale and Hearty inscription, with a PvP Illusion Focus of Fortitude, Forget Me Not inscription
4) The above wand, with a PvP Illusion Focus of Fortitude, Live For Today inscription
I understand why you would want set 2-4 because of the bonuses it gives for different situations (set 2 for surviving, set 3 for casting the hexes, set 4 for emergency energy?) But why would you want -5 energy and +15% damage on a weapon that does like 3 damage when you don't have the attributes?

Defense against energy denial. Another thing, for wand/focus you want it to be a 40/40 set. Fortitude mods on wand/focus is a bit of a waste when you can get casting bonuses and switch straight to defensive.

I assume 40/40 is 20+20 half casting time and 20+20 half skill recharge?
