I never chose my profession just filled in any spot I was asked. Normally the GvGs were scheduled a week in advance with the build required. I would spend all week just practicing most of the bars until game day. I was UAX from heavy PvE days, so my flexibility to play roles was helpful to the guild.
Many times until trust is earned you will be stuck in traditional bitch roles. I enjoy guesting and playing with other alliance guilds in order to get more chances to try out new roles.
Be UAX or have enough faction to play any role asked. From there you can find what you are best at and practice. Be familiar with the roles of every person in the build. Knowledge will make it easier to adapt and eventually succeed to the role you need to fill.

Besides monks, were rangers always part of the meta or were they completely replaced by paragon at one point?

Firstly i figured i wanted to kill shit, not keep shit alive. So monking went out the window.
Then i tried ranger/mesmer and got the hang of mesmer a lot better than ranger so played that for ages.
Played runner then because that was the only position a friends guild needed, quite enjoyed it but then the guild disbanded when i was away a week or two.
Then my ping went tits up and i got bored of sitting around in midline and so now i tend to play frontline.
Killing shit is fun.

I think the closest rangers came to being replaced by paragons was last year before the millions of paragon and fire ele nerfs, with teams either running DF honor, dR balance, or rawrspike. More people eventually switched to rawrspike because it was the more consistent build since it has slightly more leeway for mistakes and it's less dependent on ping to win games. DF honor was for the most part abandoned, and rangers were mostly only played in dR balance-esque builds. Even then, there were quite a bit of rangers being played.
Rangers died for a short while in the smiter meta too.

In my first pvp guild I just played whatever was needed which was about 5-6 months after release. We ran crazy stuff like echo meteor shower ele's and bars with no elites. Then we started to do TOMBS which is now HA back when iway was very very popular so I played warrior alot loved just hitting 2-3 skills made things fall to the ground.
So in gvg i front lined about 85% of the matches and flagged the rest. As the guild grew we got more warriors so to give the other people a chance I flagged and learned to love it. Nothing like keeping npcs alive while they kill off gankers.
Find something you know your good and run the hell out of it also make sure your having fun while playing because if your not having fun then no point in playing at all.

You'd think more people would be winning with it, in that case.
Anecdotal evidence would suggest that either people suck at it or collectively signed a treaty agreeing to lose to it on purpose.

Jeez... well seeing as i started High end PvP recently (2-3 months) I can tell you it's very competitive to get into GvG. as a newbie it will be hard to find groups. My advice is find the meta and practice it a lot in many situations. PvE is good for this. Then find something you enjoy and do that. And when you meet ragers and elitists (Feanor ^^) just grow a thick skin and walk away. Every time you are entering a group for GvG have 10k ish faction sitting there for emergencies. And make sure you're runed correctly or Feanor will rage at you. And stay away from the guild Bad Americans [Am] cos Feanor lives there o.o.
just my two cents
