Because playing a defensive split can allow you to get kills more easily at main team. And if you wipe their main team the split will have to collapse anyway. Its a harder tactic to do but you can get better rewards than if you were to just mirror their split.
Of course there are some situations where you do need to send offense back to defend.

As told by Axiom.
I like the byob nature of it, but I'd like some more survivability.
I think with Assassin secondary and dash this might be better as a byob build, using some defensive skills.

I think thats a very build dependant statement. In a rend spike build or something similar where the spike target can be easily identified by enemy monks and still be a hard save(bloodspike is similar in that regard I suppose), defensive "stall" responses work better. I can see that.
TO another poster, I can't think of many assassin skills that would provide "more surviveability" other than maybe hidden caltrops, which of course means you aren't running a pd flagger anymore.

Dark escape and Shadow refuge combo could be with a mid-level spec. Now that it's a 6 sec enchant you can extend it with an enchant set it actually provides some pretty decent healing if you also attack which is not a hard condition to fulfill.
Ether feast also heals a bit now, but there really are not too many byob style useful inspiration skills.
