To OP: Defy Pain will get you nowhere in RA. Bad advice is bad advice.
But I guess choosing and making builds comes with experience. When GW just came out, I thought [Gladiators Defense] was the best skill ever for RA. I'm glad I changed my views.

Warriors does 2 things in PvP, Spike or Pressure. Making yourself a tank won't help because you're fighting against players , HUMANS with brains to think and they'd not attack someone who just used dolyak signet.
p.s. dolyak signet is a self snare in PvP. its useless.
as i was saying, we humans are different from NPCs ( monsters ) with AI. we know how to think. you might have died only once in 10 battles but did you do any damage ? no. useless you're going against NPCs in PvP e.g. a 1v1 in someones GH and you want to play around with the guild lord ? well thats a different story.
you are missing out a lot of killing by making yourself a tank. i myself like killing more than supporting so i seldom play midline / backline roles but thats just me. i won't say defy pain is bad for pvp. defy pain can help to solo cap in AB which makes it good.
but remember, PvP is all about teamwork. so what if you're the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing ( sorry bout my language ) best monk, without a high damage team , you're not gonna get anywhere or if you're the proest pvp-er. without a monk, others can kill you as easily as they killed others. you see the point ? its all about team work, RA doesnt have that apparently so it pisses me off alot >.>

You might as well go [Devastating Hammer] and lineback warriors instead. It at least gives you an option do to something useful in case you're not getting attacked.
Being always the last standing only means you're useless to the point where enemy doesn't care if you die last.

RA is really easy once you understand the basic dynamics. Here is a simple guide:
1) If you are not healing, mitigate damage. Whether this be in the form of linebacking, additional healing, interrupts, or straight-shutdown (bsurge, fc water, ect), do it. Damage should not be a problem (unless ofc you do zero damage).
2) Bring some sort of survivability. This does not mean a self-heal. Don't gimp your bar or waste time by healing yourself. It never works. Bring some sort of defensive stance. This will not only save you in many situations, but it will allow you to res without fear of interruption.
3) Get Res if at all possible and res the second someone dies. Not only does this significantly lower the damage your team takes overall, but it makes matches faster.
4) Play healer. This is something you should do/try regardless. It helps a great deal when attempting to become a better player. The basic skills of positioning, weapon-swapping, and energy management can all be obtained by playing monk.
I hope this helps somewhat.
NOTE: As a general rule, you cannot win without a monk.

I'm at Glad 5, 95% from RA due to erratic game time availability that doesn't allow more organized pvp often. I love RA. Here are some observations that may help you:
1. My best RA faction/glad farmer is a WOR Rit/A, the skills are: [Protective was Kaolai] [Recuperation] [Blind was Mingson] [Weapon of Remedy] [Mend Body and Soul] [Dark Escape] [Feigned Neut] [Rez Sig]. No crap about Recuperation please, it has a long range and gives team mending during the crucial first 30 seconds of the match, well worth the 25 nrg. Conditions in RA make WOR better than Xinrae IMO. This build is not suitable for TA or longer pvp matches.
2. The most prevalent reason for RA difficulty is Synch Cheating, which is rampant in RA. Allied guilds do it, folks unguild and do it. It's atrocious that Arenanet has allowed this blatant cheating to continue for so many years when there are easy possible fixes. A single synched team can stifle the RA fun for MANY honest random players. Save your breath rationalizing it if you do it... it's cheating, end of story.
3. I do about 20k faction in an evening of play over about 4-5 hours with many interruptions and short afks. The secret is not carrying bad teams, but when things go bad from the start, resign, or just die and don't rez. In my experience, the team that gets the first kill down in RA will win about 75% of the time, so if you are on a team with a mending wamo, do your best until someone dies on the team, then just let things happen. Moves all the decent players to the next match and the next deal of the cards. Also, if you are on a team with no damage, just resign rather than drawing out the match.
4. I've been playing GW for 3+ years now, and the average skill of the player base is definitely much worse than it used to be. PvE in Prophecies was actually difficult enough to train players in certain pvp basics. PvE in subsequent expansions and OP PvE skills have led to a very poorly skilled player base entering pvp for the first time. That's the given reality, and one reason it's harder to get streaks. Lots of synch teams + poorly skilled noobs = difficult streaks.

My advice
I've been PvPing for about 4 months and am G3. When I first moved into PvP it was difficult as I'm sure everyone can agree with. The reason for this is because you're not used to the builds that others use and also because you haven't yet established your own PvP build that you are comfortable with.
I mainly played as ranger all the way to G1 and half way through G2. When I 1st went to ra it was so hard to get 5 wins I didn't understand the PvP terms and didn't fully understand my role in the team. This all comes with experience but there are some things things that you can do to help you improve faster.
Learn to go be aware of all your team mates positiions and never run away from them, always stay as a group. Learn to follow your team mates targets. If you are playing certain classes it's not always wise to go for the opposing teams monk. For example, if you are playing a ranger with interrupts and you have a monk on your team it's usually good to go for their mesmer/necro etc and interrupt their skills to stop them from causing your monk more pressure.
Always take rez signet with you and rez as soon as someone drops, even if they have an interruption ranger on their team they won't be able to interrupt all of you if you all rez as soon as someone drops.
Most importantly figure out what you would enjoy doing on a team. Do you want to interrupt, cause mass damage etc. Once you have figured this out pick a class that you enjoy and create a build. Test it out a few times and then change the skills that you think need to be changed. This is how all good PvPers learn and come up with a build that they are comfortable with and effective with.
I honestly wouldn't suggest monking untill you have a little more experience in PvP so you can learn the builds that people run and what you will be coming up again. I didn't start playing monk untill halfway to G3 but you can of course start earlier just not the class I would recommend for a PvP beginner.
I know some people have suggested getting builds from wiki, truthfully I wouldn't suggest this. It may get you to 5 wins but all in all you will not be learning much about PvP or improving your skills. Make a build you like and change it accordingly.
Good luck.
