what you said makes sense, chopchop, except you've forgotten to factor in the #1 rule of anet: anet WILL screw up. it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of WHAT.
the proof is more or less in the pudding. just about everything they've done for GW would've been absolutely spectacular, except there's always that small oversight, that slight bug, and/or lacking that little bit of polish. anet is like that absent-minded genius: brilliant in every way, but always screws up something in the little details.
at this point, it is probably better to just assume that something will break and be ready to make up for it in some way, than to cross your fingers and hope for the best.

We all know by now almost every MAT has had major events scheduled on the same day. To try and dismiss Anet's servers or whom ever they're using to provide the service/servers its fairly obvious as to they simply can't cope with the traffic/load/amount of users. Sry but for the past months/years you mean to tell me a core router has been broken on these so called weekends that has had nothing to do with Anet's service providers? It's all been a fluke on routers they have no control over? Across all players from different continients.... Please... When disruptions occur simply do a tracert and you'll know where and whom is responsible for the failure to provide a fluid gaming experience related to latency. I know it hasn't been my provider, and I know it hasn't been routers outside of Anets control...

1. rawr- Still silly not to put them on first, even though they don't have an invinci-build right now.
2. dP- A guild that's still one of the best despite their sad finals performance last month.
3. KMD- Finally got the gold last month, but can they do it again or fall back to their everlasting silvers again.
4. KK- Gimmick city, but have been losing to every other guild when they try to sinsplit.
5. BadV- Still should be a top contender, but on the decline.
6. yumy- Along with nH, dominating the American shitters in late night ATs. But that doesn't mean much in the mAT.
7. DirT- They always seem to get silver, and it'll depend on pairings for top 8.
8. AA- One of the better teams, but would need a vR-esque miracle to get them past top 8.
Some other silvers:
sKy- Serious ladder farmers like RIP, but should still make silver.
be- Wooooo be team.
nH- They won't have rawr guests for the mAT, so we'll see how they do.
Holz- Samy will lead this guild to victory!
OdS- Have been playing a lot, and hopefully getting better.
Cry- We'll see if they can actually beat teams this time.
StP- If they play, they should get silver or even top 8.
Shat- Same as StP.
In theory, Anet has the ability to deal with server surges, but in practice, they don't/won't do it. Trying to think or theorize that they'll do anything about it is just simply denying their history.

I wouldn't be so certain guilds like sKy and yumy will fail, they aren't top notch but there is only about 4-5 guilds that actually play Guild Wars and take it seriously, most of the top 8 guilds are usually teams that play just enough games to qualify for the MAT then return to playing other games.
It's a safe bet to fill your top 8 with consistent winners (BadV, Shat, dP, KMD, NOW, DirT, rawr) if you want a decent yield of reward points but i wouldn't be shocked to see a few of the active mediocre guilds getting top 8 using some tried and tested imbalanced builds.

1. Rawr. Their new build is actually pretty good, even if its not crazy ridiculous like the previous one. Also the smartest players around.
2. Dirt. Good and consistant.
3. BadV. Got some great players, but still seem shakey at times.
4. dP. The best pressure in the game, but this time people seem to have actually caught on that they have a good build and have been running it. Now that more guilds have experience playing with and facing it, they are gonna need to employ a bit of variety if they want to pull out a win.
5. Now/BOSS/KK. Super gimmick team that consistently delivers.
6. KMD. I really doubt they can mirror the success they had last tournament, but who knows.
7. Anonymous Amateurs. Good players wouldantcha know.
8. Yumy. Good non rawr americans, but hurt by the fact that competition during american times is generally terribad.
Others . .
shat could get in if they play a bit more
stp lacks build variety and playtime but has some good players.
nH could do well if their (extremely weak/inconsistent) backline can hold up. also need good build choices.
be team has been performing really well.

So its just a random encounter that the monthlies with huge lag and connection problems have been during major PvE events.

If not for the PvEvent we will lag due to American servers.
Guild Wars.
Predictions:
1-4 (any order)
BadV - Doing quite well since they started playing regularly again, not afraid to pull out a gimmick every now and then although I feel that playerwise they've gotten quite a bit worse since sup's first gold cape, this meta doesnt require much playerskill to be victorious.
dP - Better at linebacking than other guilds, their predictability might catch up to them though.
KMD - W/A Spike.
KK - If they stick to spikes.
5-8
rawr - Their new build isn't nearly as invincible as the old one, the fact that they only ever play on American servers will probably still allow to win them a lot of matches they otherwise wouldnt win though.
AA - Solid guild, lack of builds might hurt them though.
StP - Would be one of the best guilds if this game was balanced and they played more often, should still be able to get top 8 though.
DirT - A/P Spike.
Other silver cape candidates:
sKy - I don't expect them to do as well as they do in dATs but a silver cape should be possible.
Holz - A/P Spike.
Shat - Could get further depending on wether or not they play honorable or gimmick, silver cape should be a given though.
yumy - 216.
be - dP lite.

1. DirT, this month they know they have a chance to win and will actually try
2. rawr, good but will gimmicked out at the final
3. KMD, a little too overconfident/inconsistant to repeat quite yet
4. be, quite solid as of late
5. AA, competitive, but not quite enough
6. yumy, late night ladder farming, but too many quality names to ignore
7. dP, someone will buildwars them out, still wearing of that finals spanking
8. sKy, people doubt them, but scooms will carry them to victory
the others, badV, nH(lost dhianna to sKy), KK, StP
