Does the mes have to cast another energy draining spell on you (which wouldn't drain any energy since your negative) to trigger the mind wrack?

You are at 6 energy for example, and then switch to your -17 energy set so you have negative 11 energy. A mesmer then throws Mind Wrack on you. It will not trigger any damage untill you regen to 1, and then go BACK to 0.

Sounds kinda broken to me then, since mind wrack is there to punish someone for not having any/enough energy to drain away

Mind Wrack is more effective with the boon of people using focus swapping. It punishes people for swapping weapons to prevent losing the energy to energy denial, which in turn causes the team to lose net energy for to heal the Mind Wrack damage.
Mind Wrack should trigger, however, if it hits you while you have negative energy, but it doesn't. It's a bug with the description of the trigger. AFAIK, it triggers when energy hits zero approaching from the positive side. It does nothing IIRC when it goes on when energy is already below zero or hits zero from the negative side.

The description says whenever your energy reaches 0 you take damage. Obviously it was not designed so that if cast on a 0 energy target the target will immediately take damage. There has to be a process of reaching 0 energy from another amount.

Mind Wrack dishes out the punishment on focus switchers everytime. My e-denial builds always have MW worked in partly for this reason. It's cheap, recharges super fast, and takes about 20% damage on anyone willing to dip to 0E... it actually saves ME energy from not having to burn it all from them. Focus switching is effective, but not perfect.

AGH. This may be slightly off topic but I seem absolutely unable to find people wanting to sell crappy -5E weapons. Are there blackmarkets where I can buy those from? Or does this mean I have to actually pay loads for a seemy decent one? I notice Dralspire uses a rare weapon too, AND it's customized? I don't want to leave a hole in my pocket just for hiding energy in PvP...

Well, click here for the search "-5" on auctions. While this also shows high value items, -50 health focus items, and -5 damage shields, you should find at least a few -5 energy weapons that are not too overpriced.

What about Ether Lord energy degeneration, say if having negative energy and -3 energy degeneration energy will regenerate at +1 if you are a caster? and if having 0 energy and -3 energy degeneration energy will still degenerate if you are a warrior becoming negative? By its definition Ether Lord, contrary to Malaise, does not end!

But if you swap down to your negative energy set, you will save some of your energy pool. Ether Lord does not end on 0 energy, however neither can it drain negative energy.

I didn't realize that this was a secret or, should I say not common knowledge, I usually keep 2 +15/-1 Items in my secondary slot while monking and switch to use OOB or infuse, then immediatly switch back. E-denial is a pain in the butt, but can easily be countered, as long as the whole team in on the same sheet of music. A monks healing effectiveness will be reduced with good E-denail but not shut down. Most e-denial is on the lower side of dmg, but without heals it doesn't take long to kill a denied team. The only think about focus swapping is that it isn't very effective on a bonder.

I've been using set swatching since i first began playing GW, never saw it as a secret, just like mage henchenem said.
I highly reccomend this, however, for the reasons everyone has said. I've been using it lately alot in UWsc, because of the "Fear Me" spike of grasping darknesses at the chamber and vale, if you are a vale assassin. after locking them behind the house, i immediately switch to my scythe (20% ench in case u need to recast sf, though it's risky). With my staff, i usually had 71 max energie (with cons), while with my scythe, i get 51. in case i get spiked to 0 almost before recast sf, i can swatch to my staff, and get 20 energie (and i only neeed 25 energie for sf+deadly paradox).
Just thought of mentioning it in case it happens to you vale sins of getting spiked and getting very low on energie
