You don't have to play the sit and wait reaction game, it's about knowing when a monk will cast something. If your team is spiking, you have to time your interrupt to try and hit that infuse during your spike. Most monks try to take advantage of the conditional healing with WoH, so pay attention when someones hp goes under 50% and lay down a rupt, or watch when a monk stop kiting, not necessarily when you see an icon.
Also try making the skill casting bar bigger.

You might want to observe ranked GvG matches and follow the ranger... I've noticed all the top guilds use them in matches. You'll learn a lot just by watching a few matches. It's helped a bunch for PvP on my ranger.

Yue's ranger guide (link was posted earlier in the thread) may be old but still pretty much covers everything you can cover about playing a ranger on a forum. Read that guide, understand that guide, than obs matches and try to relate what you are seeing with that guide. It isn't just about knowing what a player is doing, it is knowing why. If you can watch a player like Zed from KMD or Yue who now plays in SkY, play and understand why they are doing what they are doing, then you have done all you can outside of playing yourself.
Once you start playing, it is about taking what you know should happen, and making it happen. Once you get a feel for the flow of a game, you learn casting patterns, and small indications on what to look for when interrupting. Spreading poison becomes second nature to you and you begin to see the other team fold, especially if you can dshot an RC. You learn to be able to count recharges without losing focus on the rest of the game (use the GvG timer to help).
Rangers split a lot because they have great survivability. Learn to watch your compass, and listen to teammates on vent so that you don't get blindsided, and can get yourself out of bad situations before they begin.
Do everything you can to understand the profession, than play it over and over until you find yourself doing three or four things at once just as second nature.

Obs yourself as well. I've had countless matches where I've gone back and noticed that I was being completely useless for a couple of minutes due to some factor I didn't notice mid match. If you get to the stage where you know what you're doing wrong without someone elses input you'll improve quickly.

You play ranger 8v8, this is what you do: spread poison.
Tab through everyone hitting them once, if you tab to a caster use savage shot. If you tab to a monk use distracting shot. When their flagger comes in push up through their team and interupt the spirit of recuperation/protective was kaolai.
You may think I'm joking but I'm not, since you're new you won't have a very strong grasp of when to use interupts anyways so you're better off spreading poison as fast as possible and if you're lucky you will interupt something. You will win games if you do this, perform your basic task without getting caught up wasting excessive amounts of time trying to interupt things. The more you play you will eventually pick up on patterns and begin to use your interupts with more precision as you gain experience.
There are exceptions for example if the other team has a domination mesmer you will want to save distracting shot for him, his spells are really slow casting anyways and easy to interupt. The other exception I can think of is if they are running some kind of spike like A/P spike or Energy Blast spike you will want to save dshot for stopping their damage skills.
If you are splitting it's another story and interupting key spells is just about the most important thing you can do. Look out for the following skills: Gaurdian, Weapon of warding, Resilient Weapon, Word Of Healing, any snares or skills that make your warriors unable to hit things such as Blinding Flash or Blurred Vision.
I would definitely stick to 8v8 if you're inexperienced though, spreading poison is probably the easiest thing a ranger can do while being extremely effective.
DO NOT WASTE TIME INTERUPTING THINGS IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT IT WHEN YOU COULD BE SPREADING POISON.

So by this logic, you might as well run barbed arrows + poison arrow with mantra of resolve. There is a reason bad/new players run difficult to play yet potentially very powerful bars (or at least should).

if the other team is under a lot of pressure, tab to the other team's WoH monk. When you see them use WoH, count to 3 and click your D shot button. You may not get WoH every time in this way, but if you do get it you will probably win the game.

Also know when to play offensively and when to play defensively.
If the other team is under no pressure and your team is whiping, consider interupting a diversion over a WoH. Apply same logic to other situations.

Something that stands out to me in the TQ post every time I read it is the suggestion for Troll's Unguent. Now, I typically play a Cripshot with the usual trimmings, and typically throw in Zojun's Shot (Point Blank Shot). Now, while I could use this for Trolls, I don't really see the point unless I'm ganking NPCs solo. Swapping PBS for Trolls makes me less effective at spikes and pressure, and doesn't relieve much pressure from me at all. At 10 wilderness, I would be healed for (8*2)*13=208 health over its duration, but the activation time is just silly and asking for an interrupt. Even if it isn't interrupted, that is three seconds I'm not spreading poison or otherwise assisting my team.

That was written before change to LR I believe. Now, there's really no need for troll since LR+NS completely outclasses it and can generally keep you alive long enough to reach a healer. I just haven't bothered updating that in.
