Rayne and a few other old school guys had a guild a little while back (i forget the name), but I think they gave up at around r150 or so due to the lack of interest anymore.

I thought Lucis was sort of a package with Valor. iQ "inherited" 2-3 "extra" players that Valor brought. That was just the impression I got from listening on some vent convos. Of course, that could have been the wrong impression. And I was busy trying to keep some dumbass alive in Urgoz who was hell bent on killing himself. So, I wasn't listening really closely.

Well, I was informed by a member of dR that Rayne no longer plays, but he still sits in the original iQ. He would give build feedback to dR from time to time.

I'm sure dR could do with some build feedback, given the builds they've been running lately.. oh wait.

Whether iQ played matters little to me, they'd be smart enough to play it for purely strategical reasons whereas playing it in what sounds like lower ranked ladder matches seems pretty dumb to me since it's pretty boring.

there have been so many different build eras now that we can actually compile the people into a thread and talk forever. how fascinating. just think, we have seen Chain Lightning be the most annoying tombs build, then turn into one of the least used skill in the game. We have seen spirit spammers make people lag out. we have seen people using the walls in gvg to avoid the first wave of extremely powerful ranger spikes in the meta. we have seen bunny thumps with smiting, lightning orb spikes, fast cast spikes, blood spikes, more blood spiking, crip shot rangers, boon prots, ether prod runners, and a whole lot more. so much history to the gvg world.

hi
i was around for gwwc and gwfc, too bad i was 15 and played ranger spike all day
I think a major influence of the fact that the game died is sponsorship. Regardless of what game it is, any competitive game has a metagame driven by top players. As much as top players enjoy playing a game, being "top players" they can make money doing so, so they might as well go for both. It didnt take much to keep people playing the game, small local tournaments in korea and gw world championships was all it took to keep the people at the top to continue playing gw. If they couldnt sponsor events, the very least they could do was listen to the top competitive players (both in and out of alpha)who loved their game so much and take their advice on how they should balance and develop the game. Constant random skill changes alongside discontinuation of sponsored events was a huge slap in the face to any competitive player to wanted to enjoy playing the game. Not to say these were the only reasons, but alongside other things I think the game really fell apart.
The way it looks to me I dont think the metagame is really THAT bad currently. There really isnt too many skills out of balance(relatively speaking), and the ones that are really dont completely change how you create your build, but rather how you choose to play it. I think, contrary to after the release of nightfall, if the people who quit the game started coming back I think they would be pleasantly surprised.
On the topic of todays top players, I cant speak for the euro side but I totally agree that the top americans are basically just the only people that continued playing. The people at the top today were the lower end 100-500 players a year ago, and as much as I want to be optimistic and say they all got better, after watching matches it seems like everyone else just got worse. I would assume that this is atleast somewhat true for euros, as these so called "top americans" continue to do reasonably well in the MAT's.
With rawr, as highly as I think of their skill and how they symbolize the death of the game, I think they get plenty of hate as is so ill just leave it at that

What is with this the game is dead excuse train, the game really isnt dead at all. Yes many top players quit, yes no further Championchips and no Money and hardware prices made also some people quit and yes ofc that sucks that ncsoft/anet didnt put too much effort to establish Guild Wars as a real and wellknown esport title.
Then again just as much people quit out of other reasons, most players started to go to University or they just went on to other, newer games. There are so many people that quit out of several real life issues, and those are much more then the bubble of ppl that quit because they werent pleased with game balance or couldnt win money anymore... But just as much people moved up in their spots, the last mat had 7 swiss rounds with 65 participating guilds (only 1 or 2 forfeit right away, dont remember), what does that tell you? Enough people still like this game and play it on a regular and srs basis. So not all of these players were here since the start of Guild Wars, so? This doesnt make all of them bad just because they werent around when there was GWWC...
