not everyone have ~100 AL vs elemental. the typical fire ele can dish out around 100 damage to a soft target with every hit, and that's where spirit bond comes in.
that, and without WoH, you need spirit bond for the elite ele shrine.

DD looks sweet with pre-veil too. Always fun to have some offensive defence on a monk

Ok, I understand that.
I usually have SoA in my build which soaks damage fast.
I think my choice is also biased since I mainly monk in AB for people I know.
We mainly run teams with one melee, one shrine clearer, one interrupter/crippler utility player (ranger/mesmer) and a monk.
The Ele shrine isn't much of a problem with some pre-veil and making sure veil is ready to use before taking aggro. Remove Lightning Surge when it hits someone, patient fast to catch the first offload of hammer/orb when you see it being cast. And have the interrupter do his job there. Perhaps LS when needed though there is a risk it's wanded when cast at the wrong time. The only times I've seen the eles spike someone was when they were taking full aggro of all of them. Or when they were using superior runes, but you know that after one hit and that's probably not from the ele shrine. That's the time to start yelling at people
The occassional dervish player will most likely have some trouble catching anyone if his team doesn't have a decent monk because of the cripple/mesmer hexes. And there is a fair chance that we have some blind in the team.
Either I form teams myself (not that often) and require some stuff from people. Or I play with people I know in which case we discuss team builds.
Perhaps that's my advantage....
Edit as reply to bungusmaximus' posting below this one:
We do run monk since there is a chance of running into annoying opposing teams. If those are not present I find myself healing/protting other allies often when they are crumbling away (random teams with no healers ftl).
It's not that hard after a couple of hours practice in click-healing.

With a team like you describe I wouldn't even run monks, and yeah, movement control ftw in AB. When I see someone cast 'water attunement' I'll make sure to make a detour. Chasing rangers is right out as well, when I can't dodge pin down they degen me to death and lol at me.

The no ping mentality is from tards who do not realize that they can simply ping a wiki build that is widely recognized as good, and then switch to whatever they want afterwards with their party being none the wiser...at least until the match starts.
My years of refining my troll-fu mastery have opened my eyes to this masterful wisdom. I ping a typical Cripshot build from wiki, party leader accepts the build as viable. I then say to wait while I fix my equipment and proceed to switch my bar to 8 nature spirits and spam them around the map during the entire match.

I am pretty sure there are many PUGs out there which don't give a hoot of what build you run, but if your team leader wants you to ping your build and you simply want to have fun with a bad build, the best course of action is to simply leave that PUG.

Not if they are all wiki!
I tend to just look at their title to see if they have played some AB, a vast chunk of PUG haven't got AB titles switched on or the don't have one. Ether way that rules them out as stupid. Kurzick titles mean little due to DTSC farming, so a Luxon title usually means they can play a bit. Watch our for Gladiator titles, the chances are they don't know what cap means and run straight for a fight. In general I don't invite Rangers or Sins, they tend to run off and fight instead of capping Eles are a pretty safe bet for capping.

Fortunately, I don't really mind Grenz very much.
You know what, I run two f*cking interrupts on primal rage axe and neither of them hits for 0 damage, but then your primary isn't war so whatever.

it's unfortunate that we are on grenz all the time, cause the keys is much better looking even if those 2 are the same map.

I don't personally know of a good one, but that means little as I am not interested in fff in any form so I don't follow it very closely.

They don't. They're the kind of player that runs into a mob and dies halfway through casting Firestorm on a moving target. Lather, rinse, repeat. I see a ton of those every single day and they never, ever ever ever learn. It's actually frustratingly hilarious to watch them die because of the same mistakes over and over again.
I ping when asked and I'm perfectly willing to change my build around if I think it makes sense. My monk once got asked to change from a WoH/hybrid bar to a Glimmer of Light/all-heals-no-prot bar. I left the group that time, because no.

Wasn't it Mount Qinkai? I don't do either speed clear, though.

I see a lot of these people, really, although when I last went in it was less Firestorm and more ROJ. (Hamstorm obviously got replaced by hamray.)

Etnaran Keys is starting to feel more and more like pre-searing ascalon. Fond memories of a place you'll never return to.
