Default Tips on calling?

I am not really much experienced at HA and want to improve, I am constantly playing warrior , monk, ranger and any other thing that results ( I dont want to concentrate completely in one , I'm mainly warrior, but just playing one is bad)

so, I really need to know how to call, and I completely suck at it, if someone could post anything that could help, i'd be grateful.

thanks in advance

a good start is learning the metas and the counters especially if you want to call strat.

Not a caller myself, but listen to my guild mate do it all the time. Anyway as was posted above learn to recognize builds if you want to call strategy, and if your calling spikes something along the lines of "Spike this target (ctrl select target) In 3-2-1". If a spell is 2 second cast tell that player to cast on 2 and like wise for other skills to make sure you get a clean spike.

I'm a terrible caller myself, I avoid it at all cost - however these are the things I think you might want to look at.

1) If it's (partially) a caster spike, make sure people don't spike on their 40/40 sets or a staff, but rather their defset.
2) Practice a spike in Isle of the Nameless before running it.
3) Don't count down from more than 4 or 5, and make sure seconds are actually seconds.
4) Overextended targets first, also people ressed using Dpact are a priority.
5) Recognize prots.
6) Use ctrl+shift+space to call (Target) rather than ctrl+space (Attack).

More strat calling:
1) Try calling damage types in regard to teams you're facing (eg: "Mathway, fire shield people.").
2) Remember ways to beat gimmicks, and apply them.

Those are the first things to pop to mind, at any rate.

Did you want advice in playing warrior in general, or the actual calling/what to call?

Btw, I would say learn to count down a spike with realistic seconds (use the in game clock if needed). It's self defeating when people do it wrong =P.

5) Recognize prots.

i mostly prot. the better 'callers' i play against recognize what prots are put on the target they are moving towards and will shift targets until i get confused or have most skills on recharge. when a prot is cast on someone it makes an animation that gives away if its guardian, SoA, AoS, SB, LS. also watch out for weapon spells.

It mostly depends on situation and build.

I've read that you got to make sure people don't use 40/40 sets. Only partially true.

Whenever I run a build with a fire ele and/or a taint, we can usually just steam roll them. Having your necro "hold back" because he has to spike on time is often going to generate lesser pressure. This, in return, gives a prot monk more time to prot the spike, and hence it won't go through anyways.

Against shitspikes (W/A, Rspike, etc), then ye. Have your team camp their shields sets etc.

What I usually do is the regular spacebarring with auto-select foes turned on. (It automaticly targets the nearest foe I think, or atleast that's the feeling I have)

Then I tab through people (You can still keep on attacking that way), look for something low/overextended or simple unprotted/dp'ed whatever... Look where he is exactly on the map (how far from me), hit rush, 3-2-1 (Bull's on 2) and then dismember + follow up.

Also, knowing all the animations is usefull. Guardian, Spirit Bond, Aura of Stability and SoA come to mind.

If you are a warrior caller using the suppress action function is good so you don't pre-attack the target.

1) Tell everyone else to SHUT THE RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO UP and to only talk if they have something VERY important to say.

Call spikes CONSTANTLY if your are spiking with slow rechargeing skills then spike on recharge (though good monks will pick up on this, but this is HA so who cares) if it's a melee spike you should be spiking every 10 secs or so, going 45-60 secs between spikes means they dont take as much pressure and they stop your spike easier, 10 seconds between slikes may not kill everytime because skills are rechargeing or other spikes are using support skills sometimes but you can pile on the pressure.

TELL you spike assisters what to spike with. If you have a Rend Enchantments and you want it used say "Spike *This* with Rend in 3 - 2- 1" or Spike with "Defile" or whatever skill you KNOW you need as an assist. Or else you can ask, "lemme know when Rend is Charged" or "lemme know when you have Go For The Eyes"

As the others said, Know the maps, know the meta know the counters.

You are missing the point. As the spike caller it is your responsibility to put the spike when and where it is needed. There is a difference between the spikes when pressuring while putting forth a spike every 5-10 seconds and when a spike must go through.

As a midline you will often have the choice of participating in spike assist or making an opportunistic play (whether warrior hate, snaring someone out of position, dropping well placed AoE), the general tone of the caller will let them know when it is okay to forgo spike assistance to exploit an opportunity and when they must participate in a spike.

Is calling necessary in pressure builds ?

War asked me to call today, I'd call, then switch, then call, etc because I switch instantly when I see someone get protted...

I keep seeing other frontliners chasing monks around when there are nearby squishies and it makes me sad.

Depends on the build, but in most cases, yes. Call for damage to finish low targets, call for AoE to accompany your knockdowns, call for spikes to catch monks by surprise. Calling doesn't mean you can't target swap. Even if you just call a spike ever few target swaps, it adds a new threat level to your offense. You don't have to kill anything with every spike, you've accomplished your goal if you force the other team's monks to spend energy on SB/infuse.

You call spikes, you don't call trains. If you have to have your whole team behind the warrior to pressure, reconsider the build, also get people that can watch to see what their warrior is attacking.

Even within a pressure build, bursts of damage are what get kills, and calling for a burst of damage is still entitled a spike even if the build itself isn't designed exclusively around spiking. So yes, calling is still used in pressure builds; it is not always used, but it is still used sometimes.
