Guild Wars PvP is and always has been about social networking. You make friends with people, be polite, listen to people who are better than you are and be willing to learn and they (generally) give you a shot. They in turn think of you the next time their friend's group is 7/8 and you can play whatever it is they need. If you want to be successful at it, you put in the time and the effort. Yes, you'll be terrible right now because you don't know the maps, win criteria, current meta, etc. But that will quickly change if you keep your eyes and ears open and be willing to listen and learn. Gl, hf, don't die!

If it was attributed to iway, everyone will be running it. Thats not the case. I attribute my success to my very skilled friends and the way i pug.

I like how you mention bribing people to play on your team.

You will be surprised, how much of pvp skill is actually locked in pve players (not talking about the freshies, i am talking of the ones that have r10/played gvg in reasonably high standard etc). If you think someone is very good but spends a lot on pve. Just bribe him. My only use of keys is bribing people. I remember paying 50e to one guy cuz he said he was doing uw farm and cant come cuz he was in middle of run.
In hardcore pvpers, its hard to bribe cuz they want to play within their little circle of players and have no use for pve gold.

HA in quiet hours much? Hell teams will take everyone that can hold a weapon. That and don't be afraid to ask teammates for tips, if people are nice they will gladly give them. Been HA'ing this entire morning and I'm r1 go figure. Don't expect some r10 PUG to take you along, they're no fun to play with anyways because their tactics and style will probably be so far ahead of you that you won't even be able to follow what theyre doing.
Oh, and there's wiki for map objectives and builds of course.

I was someone that missed out on the primetime days of HA. I got into it a couple months ago and have gotten my r3 but still don't have much luck getting groups. Really if you want to play in good ranked groups you have to prove yourself, over and over and over. Playing a good match here or there wont work. Be nice, be friendly, have all the skills unlocked, be willing to take advice espcially from people.
You will be insulted and called a noob or what not but don't get mad or affended just find another group, or go back to PVE to take a break. I have made several friends that are well above my rank and _SOMETIMES_ they take me if they got room. If not I go randomway. I would recommed playing randomway to get to your r3 and then try joining r3 groups or just doing more randomway. Yea i know randomway is lame but really randomway is all about you. Its your chance to learn to play in a low expectations envioroment. You won't get huge 30fame wins but you can easily farm fetid river and UW for fame, and you know all the high ranks I've meet have been in randomway so its worked out for me.

despite what anyone says you can't find people to 'carry' you up the ranks unless perhaps you know those friends in real life. I haven't found any friends to do that in the 4 years I been playing. I only recently started HAing, but it is only because my guild occasionaly does it. unfortunately not often though.
before I was with my current guild, I hopped prob over 100+ guilds looking for groups that HA'ed. out of at least 100 i'd say only about 3 or 4 guilds HA'ed and they did it so terribly that we never made it past the first match. my current guild owns it up in there, but still we do it maybe once in 2 months, so needless to say rank progression is slow.
in short? one day you can get to rank 5+... about 4 years from now. and then you can get into those groups requiring rank to get in. I have never seen ranks 3+ forming so I dunno where that number came from. By the time all of that happens though I'm sure most would have gone to GW2 or just quit the game entirely. playing gimmicks have never worked for me, I have all skills and items unlocked and can run any caster class well (including the oh-so-desired monks) and I never have seen pugs forming. I fail at Melee, and have never tried running one as I KNOW that I fail at Melee.

My old guild's prot monk went from r0 to r5 in a couple of weeks despite not knowing any of us irl. If in 4 years you've not met anyone that will HA with you, you're doing something wrong.

Protip: joining PvP based guilds (The ones with open recruiting on such sites as this one, not the "pvp guilds" that sync AB and advertise in Kamadan) greatly increases the chances of finding guildmates/alliancemates that HA. So much so that I haven't really found any active PvP alliance that doesn't do HA on a fairly regularly basis. If you joined PvE based guild (owning a town is a PvE goal) and are wondering why you can't get people to carry you through HA/GvG I got no help for you there.
If during those jumps between 100's of guild you didn't meet anyone that you left enough of a lasting impression for them to invite you along and introduce you to a group of people you'd get along with better, then every last bit of this is your own damn fault.

I've never joined a guild that owned a town or wanted to own one actually. I don't even know what advantages that gives you. I will admit that most of the guilds I found through Kamadan, however they were advertising for HA... hence why I joined them.
one was in the in the top 5 pvp guilds at the time, I don't remember the name but I do remember that in order to HA with them I had to trial through 50ish others in skirmish tryouts to see if i qualify for them... I understand the reasoning i suppose but... seriously?
It is way easier to find GVG groups than HA at this point for me.

Make your own teams, roll 5 r/a, and orders nec ad 2 monks and rake in fame while you roll your face on the keyboard. HA is srs business :P. keep it simple when your bad at HA, takes less time to form up so people usualy will stick around a few rounds.

Perhaps it's no coincidence that the people who spend their time complaining on forums are the ones who can't make any friends.
Here's my advice, for what it's worth:
Play Randomway. It honestly does better than any unranked PUG that you can join. It's a low pressure environment where you can meet other people who are in the same boat as you, and often attracts higher ranks who are bored and just want to play. I've held halls during dead hours with randomway, and beaten some really good teams. It's also super fast to form, and so you minimize time sitting around not learning/earning fame.
Make friends. When you're higher ranked and people know of you a bit more, you can afford to be an asshole. You really can't when you're unranked. Be somebody that people will want to play with. Keep the bitching to a minimum, play hard, be friendly and open to advice/criticism. If you're lucky enough to make decent friends, it's that fastest way to improve and gain fame. In response to the person above who talked about spending years getting r5, I'll give you two examples. I earned my r5 with a small group of friends who were around my rank, and through PUGing on my own. It took about 6 months. Over the summer my guildies and I made friends with an unranked guy who was a decent prot, and got him most of the way to r6 in about a month. The point is, be somebody that people WANT to help, and not a conceited moron.
Stop complaining about rank discrimination. Calling people with more experience than you assholes doesn't make them want to help you.
Play gimmicks for fame, but play a variety of them, and try something more balanced now and then. You won't get as much fame, but you'll improve faster. Don't be the guy who gets to r12 and then realizes he can only play one bitch bar.
This may seem contrary to the above, but you should focus on only a few roles. If you like monking, become good at it and you'll get to play it more and for better groups. Don't restrict yourself to one build, and alway take the time to play other roles occasionally. It's a balancing act between playing enough different roles to understand the game better and getting enough practice to become really good at one or two. For example, I choose to infuse or play frontline whenever I have the choice. That means I can focus on improving in those two areas, and when I'm playing other roles, I can keep an eye out for things that can help me become a better infuser or frontliner.
There's probably other stuff too, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Most importantly, stop bitching about how hard it is and focus on how to get past that.
