is it worth it?
Well recently i have had the urge to start playing again, i quit a few weeks before factions came out, i only did gvg and tombs and leveled one character up to 20, so i have all the skills unlocked, armer, and runes for the prophecies campaign. Well anyway i was looking at the store and i was probably going to get the pvp kit, since it enables all the characters from the expacs in pvp play and gives you skills as well. I was also thinking of getting the pvp item unlock as well and then just unlocking all the skills as i play. The thing that worries me is that i read these forums, and everyone talks about the game being dead, is it really that hard to find gvgs or groups for ha anymore?
I realize this is probably the wrong forum, but i am only going to be playing pvp so that's where i need opinions from, people who currently play the pvp side of the game.

GvG isn't what it used to be. I didn't play before factions so I can't really compare, but the general consensus nowadays is that gvg is alot worse now. You could watch some matches on observer (press B in town) before you decide.

The game is definitely different with all the power creep introduced with NF, but it is still the best thing around. Creativity is pretty much gone, so you'll basically be seeing the same three builds all day in Tombs and two in GvG.
This week's update may make a few people go back to GvG for a bit, so it might be a good time to try to make a comeback. Finding non-gimmick Tombs groups can be difficult (I think, I don't really Tombs much), but if you have any friends that still play, you should be fine. Finding a team for GvG isn't too difficult, but finding a team that isn't completely abysmal is difficult if you don't have friends that still play.

The short answer: no
The long answer: The game plays completely differently from back during prophecies, it only vaguely resembles the old game. The game has lost a large amount of population. HA has, at peak, 2 populated districts total as opposed to the old days with multiple populated American, multiple populated international (I assume the European districts were populated as well). Five minutes used to be an incredibly long time for GvG matches, but now 15-30 minutes or more is commonplace for a wait. Look at the forums, forum activity has dropped tremendously. R/A's are back again, shattering assault is even less enjoyable to play against than the old escape/death blossom, yet there has been maybe one or two posts mentioning this; people don't even care enough to complain. That is the state of this game.

Yes it is that hard unless your on some core group of friends, Guild Wars population has dropped dramatically, GvG's take upward of 15-30 mins if you log in during the most populated times of the game, and may take even longer if you play during oceanic or asian timezones.

The above.
If you're american it'll be difficult to play consistently and avoid crappy attitudes.
Euro hours are still somewhat active with 2-4 HA districts and ~3-5 min waits for gvg matches unless you have ridiculous rating.
In general you need contacts, if you have any then its great, if you don't then it can be hard to retain motivation when people always want references etc.

We're not talking about PvE here, because PvP is about competition, and you're not being very competitive if you play with proph-only skills

Thanks to everyone for all the good input, I'm American but I'll probably play a good amount during some of the peak euro hours as well. Just waiting for ncsoft to reply to my ticket, since they added the gay character name i can not log in, I'm surprised they dont have a way of giving information to get past it in case you forgot your character names.
So hopefully i will be able to start playing sometime this weekend. I actually created a trials account and have been observing a lot of gvg's and Halls. Now i see why people are complaining about how everyone is running the same basic build, i saw two top 50 guilds running the exact same setup today.

2006 lol.
I wouldn't bother loggin in at this point. If you enjoy sitting around doing nothing or like Random Arena which promotes head banging then the game in it's current state is for you!!! I haven't played in a few months now but even just a few months ago the Euro gvg scene showed the exact same signs/trouble that plagued the North Americans back in 2007, easy a 2/3 decrease in active guilds, after a few GvG's you play the same guild again.

Americans have crappy attitudes on messageboards. Now there are a few I've played with that have bad attitudes in game, but they never get anywhere and no one ever invites them; for the most part the Americans I've played with are all fairly good natured despite their messageboard reputations.
Then again considering that our entire timezone has no one left, I think we are entitled to be a little bit upset.
In all seriousness if you liked 2005-2006 GW and haven't played since then, don't. The game is so much different and so much less satisfying than it was before they 'added content.'

Its probably a kinda bad generalization, but the americans I've guested for have always raged when they lost, bitched and complained about everyone else than themselves.
I'm sure that isn't true for everyone, but with the few left, its somewhat of an issue since most people don't wanna put up with those kinda things for very long.

But it's historical!
or some bullshit like that. Ladder rank doesn't really matter anymore, so ladder resets aren't really needed.

The people that end up reaching across the ocean for someone they don't know tend to be the people that struggle to find guests, and for good reason.

You're better off waiting for Guild Wars 2. Don't waste the space on your hard drive unless you wanna experience the PvE side also (which has expanded quite a bit since prophecies).

Just waiting for an upcoming game is pathetic. There are plenty of games out there and I'm sure there are some that the OP would enjoy.
Besides 'waiting' on something is going to do nothing but raise expectations and when that thing is finally released it is going to be nothing but disappointment.
