New to pvp looking for tips to improve
As the title says I am new to pvp and looking to improve but am at a lose for what the best way to go about it is. I normally play midline toons ele and mes and some sin for good measure. my question is whats a good way to improve my skills? I try and do HA with pug groups but we just seem to get our butts kicked almost every time I have had decent results, getting some fame about 90 from running trick build groups like RTL and Invoke. I do like getting the fame from these but dont think they help me improve my game play very much.
The way I see it i have a few choices I can keep getting my butt kicked in randomways. Get some wins in trick build groups get my fame up so i can join better groups but not really know what im doing. Or I can keep doing RA which I do think helps some but is so random its hard to know if what I am practicing is going to transfer over to HA and hopefully in the future GvG. Are any of these options better then the others for improving, am I missing another way to learn that I should consider?
one last quick questions. Is it better to stick to one build for awhile till I know its ins and outs or should I run a bunch of different builds so I can more easily fit into groups? (I have been swapping around between the builds I see people wanting for their groups most often).
I have a bunch of other more specific questions but this is quickly becoming a wall of text so Ill stop now but would appreciate any other advice you all could give me to help me on my way.
thanks for any help

I'd suggest you go for GvG before going HA. There's no rank discrimination there (or at least I haven't seen it yet) which means you can play balanced without being something in the likes of R11+. HA is dominated by gimmicks nowadays so it is - in my opinion - not the best place to learn PvP.

If you play more different builds, u can join groups easyer and understand enemies faster. If you stick to one build (class), you become alot better with that class.
Personally, i would go for a class that is needed in alot of builds! and become good at that one.

Play RA and watch good people. Imitate them.

abandon ra
observe a lot, watch who does what, where and when and WHY.
observing lets you watch everyone, how they move and react as a team.
also exposes holes in defense strategy which can pay off later(respirit....lolznvm)
get into gvg, its really the best place to step up.
some say its dead, but that's just their small space of gw.
perhaps seek a gvg guild, from there, im confident you will make contacts which draw you closer to your goal.
theres 100s or people inn game right now and always dying to get into high end pvp, theres just nobody that i know of with the nuts to stand up and start taking some onboard. (including myself, i make no excuses)
take at least 1 person in a week people!
teach to fish!!

do the ra to build your individual skill, after g2 go try to play ha, join r7ish groups and never show your rank and learn teamwork. try to build a full friends list. then find a gvg guild.
id be happy to show u the ropes pm me: galactic pves
please excuse my grammer, im on my iphone
edit: dont watch observer untill you have a remote idea of whats happening, the poster above me said you should abandon ra, this is bad advice. ra is the best place to build individual skill.
also, only use meta builds. dont create ur own untill your good

Midlines are not a good place to start. You should pick either warrior or monk, and swap onto the other periodically until you understand lines and positioning.
The best way to get better at PvP is to GvG. The second best is to RA.

Find a guild. Your number one problem is you are trying to PuG. Getting better is all about learning tactics and correcting mistakes. It is much easier to do both of those when you have a group of people dedicated to helping you because you are a long term fixture in there team and not a one night stand.
Gimmick builds can help you learn valuable things as well. Gimmick spikes can help you perfect your timing and really improve your field awareness on finding weak, unprotected targets (as long as you aren't just being a sheep and letting 1 spike caller control the whole team). Look at the guild who just won the mAT. They were just another rank 500 crappy GvG guild until they started running A/P spike. They eventually started getting really good at it and were beating better guilds. Nowadays they are one of the best guilds in the game and have won a couple gold capes. So they are proof that running a gimmick can make you better players.
The point though is don't rely on playing with randoms to make you better. You need familiarity. You need to have constants so you can identify mistakes easier. After finding a guild guest better players you see on obs. Learn from them. Befriend them. You may need them one day to help you find another guild when/if yours falls under.

Thank you all very much for the advice i really appreciate it.
Ive been watching alot of the top teams and ive learned so much already its crazy how much better they are at spacing and battlefield awareness then I am so this is what I am concentrating on right now. I am also looking into filling up my friends list with better players, last night I was allowed to tag along with a r8 group and a few said to hit them up whenever they are on so thats a start.
I also think PVP players get a bad rap as being conceded or elitists. I was upfront with them that i was new and trying to learn and they were great they even let me call a few matches and were more then willing to answer questions I had.
If there are other new players watching this I have another tip. If you can, join groups with vent or some kind of voice client. I was able to get immediate feed back on things last night that i would never of been able to get without voice it was great.
A final note I won and held the HoH a few times last night. my first time I was having more fun then anyone should be allowed to have sitting up so if you are looking to get into pvp I say go for it ive had more fun and challenges here in a couple weeks then Ive had in a long time in pve.
thanks again for the help

Motor Fist i just want to say one thing, you have the right attitude, you admit you have to learn and you take all the info in that you can get. If only more new players had that attitude.

Hello to all.
I didn't enter in GWGuru for a long time, but, the moment i saw this thread i got the feeling i should answer it.
I must say i got the game for +- 2 years. I have been doing only PVE till some time ago. Now, i am a lot interested in PVP.
After some research i thought i could start in RA to improve my individual skills. I did it and i am now (almost) rank 2 gladiator. In fact what i want really is to play HA. However i cannot enter in groups.
I will explain: i am rank 1 hero. I did EVERYTHING i knew to play with anyone who could teach me: searched for meta builds, flexibility in professions, tried to evolve my fame rank with builds like RTL, etc.. Nothing worked.
I know my english is not perfect but i got vent and i would really love to learn.
Finally, i cannot find a GOOD guild in PVP because the good ones allways want g5+, r5+... Just.. No way.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Invoke lightning spike atm is very easy to play and very strong. However if you want to do good in it with your current status, you MUST the one to take charge and call the spikes. you will have to PUG and try to put the people you play with in your friends list(hell make your own guild with these people). Playing with the same people with invoke lightning will make your spikes very clean(eventually). I did oldschool Bspike to get from rank0-6 with rank0-3s. Dont join a guild! most HA guilds are inactive. make your own as a begginer since you look like the motivated type.
Also playing caller for any spike will make you have better target priority for other frontline classes.

Just play. Find something you like doing and do it. You'll start to develop both awareness of what to do in situations and muscle memory so that you're freer to think about the higher level stuff or weird situations that pop up. This is a large part of why the high-level players have better positioning and response time than low level players.
Although positioning (in terms of a contained battle as opposed to mapwide) was pretty miserable when last I was observing regularly. The last person I remember having actively good positioning and kiting patterns for most of a match was Daemon before GeAr exploded.

Join a bad one. You need to get some matches under your belt and the vast majority of players do not want to take either the time or losses it takes to train someone up from a comparatively low skill level. Most of the time, however, they're super happy to guest for literally anyone as long as their guild isn't going. So join a bad guild and guest people aggressively to get advice and examples.

Thanks for the advice Corporeal!
I did it. But the guild collapsed. lol. However, i did a lot of battles in HA, i can say. I even managed to play as EXPEL in Sway! And we get to HoH!! (then we lost)
But that was only one time.
It's really hard to find someone to play like me.
