This right here; your biggest problem in RA will be your mindset, not the build. As a newb you will lose and lose and lose and get called names for it. There's almost no positive feedback of any kind. After PvE, it can be a complete shock. You will need to clench your teeth and ride it out.
I wish there was a better, less oppressive environment for a PvP newb to develop in. Try to find a guild willing to take you in and teach you. Training games where both parties are friendly and on Vent/TS/Mumble will help you learn 100x faster.

This is why there is no good PvPers left in this game.
Everyone start with faceroll gimmicks, and never get good.

You prefer to play something else and get owned by teams with Monks while you get none of your own?
I say play Monk. Run pure heals with stances; a Monk in RA is like 1.5 players. As a bonus, you'll probably win more, too.

I think it has more to do with 80% of players thinking they are amazing and don't need to improve. If you have a brain, you can learn how to improve even through gimmicks. And I would hardly call an invoke ele or a curse necro a gimmick. They are pretty standard bars that just happen to be effective even if you aren't that skilled.

I would agree, play as blind bot, invoke ele. Any newbie can play that bar and with this joke flux we have at the moment, R.A is full off eles. I should not be encouraging anyone to play ele but thats just cos I am an ele hater. Blind is just to strong. When I see groups off ele vs group off melle, the melle will just resign or die, failing hard. Not fair QQ
I dont think playing as ele will help you become a better player in Ra though. Sure it will give you experience, positioning and other midline tactics but there is not much room to improve playing this class.

Word of advice. Don't play monk in RA unless you want to get bashed on by your crappy team. Take it from someone who only play monk. Apparently most players in RA can't identify what's pressuring their team. They all attack the opponent monk in an attempt to drop him/her which really never works. So what this leads to is your opponent mesmers camping and shutting down your monk. You'll than get some kind of response like "wtf noob monk". Use RA as a stepping stone for real pvp which is GvG. Learn the fundamentals in RA and try to apply it to GvG. Don't actually take your RA experience as a measure of your skills and don't try to farm the title like most people....
tbh, your too late to do any real pvp. Majority of the players who pvp today are assholes. Most of the players who did play 5 years ago have all quit. The community and poor balances in skills have destroyed the game.

The main issue in RA is about too OP builds, forcing you to usually have a monk if you want to get a certain amount of consecutive wins and forcing you to usually have one of those class in teams if you don't want to lose if both of you have a monk( i.e invoke eles, 123 earth eles, grenth dervishs, any combinason of these + monks , etc...)
Obviously , these don't fit at all for the format, and the same works for flux which should be removed asap from RA
So to answer your question, it's a bit tough... i would advice to :
- play monk... 2 choices, either you feel confident as classic bar and then you should usually get a fair amount of wins( except if you're as unlucky as me and keep getting 2 monks) ;; either just run a bar such as SoR mo/el so that you can spam and make everyone survive for about 1.30
- play invoke ele : bar requires almost no skill... spam blind on melee... you can even not care of exhaustion since you feel its effects about 2mn after the fight started... and by that time if you didn't kill anything, you would probably lose anyway...
- play wota sin with remedy: probably the bar where you will complain the less as melee( vs conditions and especially blind spammers)
