We sometimes enter ha while waiting for people, we're a byob guild.
We've had some actual streaks with the usual 1 mo/a "backline".
Obviously you won't make it to the HoH

I haven't really done byob, but I have beaten my share of randomways. Usually they have either loads and loads of damage and no healing, or too much healing and no damage. Because monks are hard to find, it's usually the first one. So yes, you can win at least UW, and if you do, skip to halls and get a ganking third team you can win halls (I've ganked so randomway could win halls) but consider that really, really unlikely.

BYOB works if you are reasonably organised. E.g you have a good damage:support:healing ratio
Chances are you wont make it to halls, and you will probably drop when you come up against a good team or an OP gimmick that you are not prepared for, but it can still be fun nontheles.

Like deluxe said its actually pretty fun when the meta allows for it.
Basically, when the gvg meta is mostly dictated by honorbalance and so on, byob can work very well in tombs.

Yep we mostly do it inbetween AT rounds when there's not enough time for a gvg we do a couple rounds of underworld, or if there are no opponents in gvg. About a year ago the meta was extremely byob friendly and we were able to beat most of the teams in a 1on1, then everyone started running ray of judgement smiters and we really didn't win anything anymore. Now we can win about half the fights I guess.

Running 4 turret rangers in ha was so much fun, or what about 3 hammer warriors .

Byob in tombs doesn't really work if you fight a halfway decent team, as you lack the shutdown to power through their defense before you start wiping because you only have 1 monk.

'Organised byob' is an oxymoron, once you start organising it the essence of bringing 'your own' builds disappears.

Basically true byob doesn't exist atm, Kaon will probably defend his byob honor here valiantly but even his guild runs for the most part some of the more popular wiki builds of the moment.

Back on People Who Annoy You [nggr] (which got banned after Izzy played for us ) we used to run pretty random shit and managed to maintain top 50ish quite easily, atm this wouldn't be possible as you'd get your shit kicked in by all the overpowered shit that's going around atm (R/A, Hexes, IoP split mesmers, Mindblast eles, etc.).

When I'm bored I sometimes play HA with myself and a friend on monk, two heroes, and random unrankeds playing fire eles and stuff.

Usually good for a halls win or two during dead hour.

How is organized byob an oxymoron in any way?
Organisation doesn't imply you force the usage of specific skills or templates, it simply implies you communicate and use tactics instead of byob just being 8 people playing RA against gvg teams.

Just byob doesn't imply in any way that you don't communicate or use tactics either, byob does imply (actually it downright states) you bring your own build, what people have been classifying as byob lately is more like byfwb (bring your favorite wiki build).

I love how it's the Byob teams doing it for lulz instead of for fame that actually end up getting decent amounts of wins.

It still doesn't prove your previous statement correct.
Whether people want to bring worse builds depends on their desire to win and how much less fun they have losing.

It sure is a bit limiting, but still has the essence of the original thought of bringing whatever the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO you want (within reason in this case) and run the around RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing up people by putting them in uncomfortable situations they're not used to dealing with.

And if their desire to win is enough, they'll suddenly 'just bring' a couple of melee, caster support, party healing, warrior hate, a word monk, an RC monk, and a runner.

In all truth, if you aren't willing to run this build in byob, then it isn't byob.

To some people, its still loads more fun to run a pretty much random selection of builds that have proven themselves as capable in split play.
"Your own build" is subjectively defined and if each person on the team defines "own" as what they find interesting but still realistic enough to keep a good shot at winning, then to that team it is byob.

There are no rules stating you have to bring shitty builds just because you can.
Its not sealed deck just because you're not playing honorbalance or some new age gimmick.

If you want to try it, go ahead. But like Mitch said, you're not going to win against any good organized team because of the lack of healing in general. In GvG, a byob team can split and collapse to try and reduce pressure, but there's none of that in HA. You'll just get crushed in a straight up 8v8.
