Default What should I make?

Hi all,

I recently returned to GW original from a long break. 3 years or so, to find I remember absolutely nothing about the game.. I wanted to ask what is the best class to build?

I know each to their own and all that, but is there something I should really avoid (Warrior/Elementalist) for example.

Thanks

There isnt anything you really should avoid in the game. A lot is possible and as you said its all about your gaming experience, and what you find fun to do.

Are you a Frontline/melee kinda guy, more of a damage dealer, Do ya enjoy nagging foes, or do you feel a support role is more your kind of thing?

There are (at this point) 3 classes that dont really compete with the rest (opinions on this may vary though) but the dervish, mesmer and paragon arent that popular.

This leaves you with:

melee: Assassin and warrior
damage dealer: Necro and elementalist (ranger, but hes also a nagger with interrupts and daze)
support: monk and ritualist

The Ritualist is one of the more popular classes nowadays. With the ability to protect and heal allies, summojn minions and summon spirits they are a very versitile class, that enables a player to find groups easy and its also very easy to get your way through the game

If you ask me, make a rit. If you like melee, go with warrior or sin, if not, necros and eles are also good options. A party rarely goes without a monk.

Avoid a derv mesmer and paragon.

My 2 cents

I kinda had the same question as Szyrex since I'm a new player.

At some point, I narrowed it down to warrior or assassin or paragon or monk (I'm not very found of casting, besides when it is for support). So I was wondering what's the class desirability on the long run both for PvE and PvP (I like to play in group, with some good solo capability, mainly interested in PvE).

From what I could gather, paragon seems to often be stuck with one build in group PvE (Imba-something ?) and I haven't seen many in PvP for the couple of matches I've watched.
There seems to be many warriors. Isn't there some kind of overpopulation?
There seems to be a high desirability for monks in PvP, because for the few matches I watched, I could see 2 or 3 monks per team. And I guess, like any MMO, healers are always in demand in PvE.
For assassin (the one I lean toward for now), it seems like a good choice for PvP, however I'm not sure about PvE. On top if, I wanted to be sure it was worth picking this and going through Faction campaign as a start (however, while I'm new at guild wars, I'm a MMO veteran).

Anyway, you get the kind of question I had in mind. Feedback on other classes is welcome on my side too so there is not much derail to Szyrex's original question.

Warrior
Soloing: Very possible, but they're really only got one build that's good at it.
PvE desirability: Yes, always.
PvP desirability: Yes, always.

Assassin
Soloing: They've got permanent invincibility. Can't beat that.
PvE desirability: Many people are stupid and closed minded and don't see that they can produce incredible amounts of damage.
PvP desirability: Meh, I don't think they see too much play in any serious arenas.

Paragon
Soloing: No. Forget it.
PvE desirability: Imbagon noew and then. Otherwise no.
PvP desirability: Don't know. Probably not.

Monk
Soloing: Yeah, somewhat.
PvE desirability: Yes, always.
PvP desirability: Yes, always.

Not really. Honestly, a lot of them are idiots that drag in 'omg I need to tank' crap from other games. Good ones are definitely worthwhile.

Also, many people play with AI teams which completely negates the issue.

Yeah, people need to stay alive. Monks aren't the only option, however.

Switch your PvE/PvP opinions around and you'll be about right. There are quite a few ways to completely shut off an Assassin, and these generally only come up in PvP where people have the intelligence to use them. In PvE, you can go crazy.

If you like support casters, look at Rits and Necromancers. They're flexible. Monks are more about keeping people alive (which is generally defined as different to support). The armor levels of foes in high end PvE and Hard Mode forces Elementalists into a support role also (their armor greatly reduces the damage from their spells). Look into those. I'd go into more detail but I don't have the time atm.

If you are Manly and Brave then go with Warrior, otherwise don't bother playing

Thanks Marty for the feedback.
I'm going to check necro and rit. I may be interested in them actually, so if you have similar inputs, that would be great.

As a side note, I've actually checked the different forums but the different recent topics seldom provide much inputs regarding the PvE / PvP desirability in the long run, hence my questions.

Always at least one character as a money source; sin, ele, rit. Other than that main is whatever you want.
