Current state of the mesmer...
A few months ago I finally got around to deleting my old mesmer and creating a new mesmer with a more appealing name and look.
I remember when I first started playing my 2nd Mesmer, I saw a ton of posts that discussed how the Mesmer class is not as good as it used to be, and that finding groups is VERY difficult for high-end farming.
Now that I finally beat 3 of the 4 games with my Mesmer, and I'm on the last mission for Factions, I could not disagree more with the negativity. Every mission I played, my mesmer was immediately added to the group, save for ONE instance in proph. In fact, many times the comments I hear from other team members when I'm added are "Yay a mesmer" or "Sweet, this is a balanced group." I have never heard anyone write something negative like "what the hell, a mesmer? They suck!" Generally speaking, most players seem to realize that mesmers are absolutely worth grouping with. This goes for FoW, UW, the new GW:EN farm teams, etc. Ok, I'll admit the Deep took time, but I blame that on the fact that there are fewer a fewer PUG Deep Runs and more and more Guild only Deep runs.
Some of the complaints from veteran mesmers stem from the fact that the newer games (Nightfall and GW:EN) feature more mobs at once than the original 2 games did. The mesmer's speciality is in killing single targets, not in area effect damage skills, which are more effective for large groups. Regardless, I have noticed one thing, a Mesmer can help a group take down an opposing monk much quicker than it could without the Mesmer. Single target shutdown has tremendous value.
What do you guys think? Do you have difficulty getting groups? If so, where?

i have had somewhat of the same experience. You just need to have a good build, and not use noobish skills taht are thrown together.

- I don't know about this "no AoE" rule. Three skills I use most frequently in PvE are Mantra of Recovery and Ether Nightmare followed by Cry of Pain. After that most mobs are down to half health. And I let the Ele heroes take care of rest. Empathy and Backfire are a bit overrated versus normal mobs, as the damage won't trigger that many times since Heroes will switch fire to your own target. Against bosses they are a godsend. Guilt works too.

And don't forget that Mesmer is a GREAT, almost imba help in Eye of the North. Every team trying to do a dungeon should get a mesmer. Holy Wrath + smiting signets = win in Shards of Orr, Cathedral of Flames and few more. And I can kill Great Destroyer with my mesmer in one minute, depending on how fast he will use his after-being-interrupted skill.

most of the time the build shows how much skill you have.

Mesmers were never wanted in PUGs, simply because most people like cookie cutter builds when in reality they can be useful.
