Hi guys. Sorry for the noobness of this question, but I am just returning to GW after quite a long time, having just bought Chapter 2. Anyway, I made my PvP toon and am going back to do unlocks...only questions is, is it worth it to play a new Ranger through Ch 1., should I do a factions toon, or doesn't it matter?

I only got my PvE Ranger to 9 before quiting, so I am basically at square 1. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Chapter 1(Prophecies) is surely the tougher push to play from the start to finish. It's long, the level raising takes longer, and the experience is perfect for learning to play a ranger.

Factions, on the other hand, you raise your level faster, yet when you get to the mainland, the challenge increase is sort of drastic. However, the type of challenges are based more on brute force and time management where in prophecies they are based partially on skill and knowledge, partially on teamwork. Factions can sometimes feel like 8 guys playing single builds where prophecies always feels like a team effort.

To be a better ranger, I believe prophecies is the best starting campaign.

for a new player I'd always recommend prophecies. pre searing helps a lot for learning the game basics, much better than anything shing jea or kamadan has to offer. also you get pretty far in the game before you turn lvl 20. in factions and nightfall you pretty much need to be lvl 20 as soon as you finish with noob island, as than the game suddenly becomes very tough with almost all mobs lvl 20...
also for unlocking, prophecies is the only campaign that rewards skills for finishing many quests. so you dont need to waste money buying a lot of skills.

I agree with Prophecies as well, the learning curve will be much friendlier for someone unfamiliar with the flow of the game. Besides, as soon as you get to Lion's Arch, you can immediately go to Kaineng Center (in Factions) and get max armor--without needing to wait (or pay) to get to Droknar's Forge--and have access to the Ranger non-elite skills in Factions from the Skill Trainer there.

Just to give my 2 pennies... see above.
I played my ranger through prophecies as my first toon - very enjoyable, nice learning curve and gives you a nice base to work from.
