Well, it depends on how you like playing...
If you like to be in there bashing things up a warrior is the best to get going with.
If you like to be what holds a group together, go a monk..
But if you like to see the damage roll in, go an Ele
I reckon the best prof to start with is a ranger, because you are not under constant pressure, and if u mess up the whole party wont fall.
If you wanted to play a Sin *snort* be prepared to struggle for a group.

If you have a group of friends or guild to play with, go with something like a ranger. It teaches you a lot about the game that you would otherwise not notice. However, for getting pickup groups, monk/ele/warrior/necro would be best. Mesmers, paragons, dervishes, rits, and sins are generally not very wanted, but are still very effective.

Monks (and Necros) are probably the best solo farmers, but monk is a difficult class to start out with. It's better to start with something like Ranger or Warrior to get a feel for the game first, and then try a monk, but hey, go for it.
Once you do get a better idea of the game, and have confidence in your abilities, I find that Monk is a good class to play when you want to try something harder like the Underworld, FoW, or elite missions. In those cases you generally just need to heal the group, and can observe what other classes/builds and strategies are used to complete the quest/mission.

As a monk, you are defender of the herd, the group, the clique, the masses, the elite, the IN-crowd, the top-o-the-food-chain, the 1%, the "haves", the majority......as an assassin you can leave all this behind.....bwahahahahah!!!

Of course, as an assassin, you can teleport in and stab the life out of the monk.

If you want to play a monk, I suggest getting a guild. As a first timer, it will be near impossible to get legendary survivor (especially on a monk) anyways, so that's probably out of the question. Though you'll have popularity in PUGs, they tend to scream and yell at you if you don't manage to keep every one of them alive (and as a first-timer, you might take it very harshly even when it's not always your fault). Going with henchmen/heroes may sound good, but again, it's difficult to choose priority targets and keep your team alive at the same time if you're not used to the game system. So the best option is to get a guild and have them guide you through difficult parts of the game.

For people new to the game I would reccomend:
Warrior
Monk
Ranger
Elementalist
Necro
I would discourage starting off with:
Assassin
Dervish
Mesmer
Paragon
Starting off in Prophecies is a good way to get a smooth start into the game as well as pick up a lot of skills on the way. Starting in Factions will allow you to level up faster, but can often end up tossing you into high level areas before you really learn much about the game. Nightfall is a pretty good medium. Both Factions and Nightfall will start off teaching you a few skills, but not near as many as Prophecies. Skills that you don't learn will have to be purchased, which can be costly if you want a good variety of skills to choose from.

As pointed out, Assassin's are a hard class to play.
Monk/Ranger/Warrior are much easier, Necro's are needed in groups, but it is a harder class still.
If you are thinking about money, can't really see you getting lots with one character, I stopped being always poor when i got to about my 5th or 6th character.
Farming/Running/Opening Treasure (in nightfall) are the 3 main ways of making money, all require you to be quite far in the game, in most cases to have unlocked some not so easy to get skills.
Find a good guild, some friends, will make your GW experience much easier, much more pleasant

I would NOT recommend monk as a starting class. Not until you're familiar with game mechanics and can prioritize enemies, the different classes you'll be dealing with, the effectiveness of your member's self heals, etc. You need to know when to use what, which is hard when you don't know much about the game.
I'd say that Ele is a straightforward class that lets you see the action from the backline, as well as offering a ton of farming opportunities (Silver Armor <3) and a large variety of builds. =)

For a new player I'd recommend any of the "core" professions. That is, anything but Assassin, Ritualist, Paragon and Dervish. For secondary profession, pick Monk.

I have 9 characters, and I'm flat broke.... constantly. I think there's something wrong with what you said. :P
Back on topic: I would start off with ranger. It's a pretty simple class to me. Until you get to the pvp stuff.
